Truck Carrying Explosives Blows Up in Utah
Wednesday, August 10, 2005
SALT LAKE CITY A tractor-trailer carrying 35,500 pounds of explosives overturned and exploded Wednesday, injuring four people and leaving a huge crater on Utah Highway 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon.
A motorist and a passenger in the truck's cab were among those transported to hospitals immediately after the 1:54 p.m. accident, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said.
LDS Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said two person in critical condition were taken by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (search) in Provo. A third was brought in by ambulance in satisfactory condition.
A fourth person was transported by helicopter to University of Utah Hospital, spokesman Chris Nelson said.
The tractor-trailer driver was able to get out of his truck and warn other motorists away from the truck before the explosion. It was not immediately known if the driver was hurt.
The canyon about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City (search) was closed in both directions.

I saw the video, made one hell of a hole in what used to be the road.
That was fortunate.
I'll bet! 35,500 pounds of explosives will do that.
Big deal. We don't need explosives here in Illinois. Our roads look like that all the time.
35,000 pounds of explosives and there was enough left of the people to take to the hospital?
The place was formerly known as Spanish Fork Flats, but following the explosion it's now called Spanish Fork Canyon.
I think you should have armed escorts front and rear for a truckload of explosives these days. What if that one truck were hijacked by terrorists? 35,000 pounds of explosives would save them at least a couple of months of smuggling it across the Mexican border.
Everyone OK in your house? :)
"We don't need explosives here in Illinois. Our roads look like that all the time."
LOL, NJ too. I practically need an off road vehicle to drive my 7 mile stretch of city streets to work.
Slogans:
Business is booming.
They had a real blast.
They got a real bang out of that.
:-)
There are lots of "black fleet" trucks on the road hauling explosives and serious haz-mat. Any escort would only draw attention and likley increase the chance of bad guys screwing with them.
I'm interested to hear more about this story today. What was the stuff? Where was it going? Isn't there some sort of rule about transporting that many explosives in one batch? How foolish!
NJ highways are way better than NY & PA.
Good point, I didn't think of that.
"Shouldn't you have a good driver transport 35500 lbs. of explosives??"
Hmmmm, I'm actually thinking that perhaps these large deliveries of explosives should be escorted... maybe by State police or someone like that. Sheesh... it would be terrible if 17 tons of explosives "went missing"!!!!!!!
BOOM
