We've had many new folks join up recently. Welcome aboard, this thread is a gentle reminder of some basic posting guidelines. (And for some of you old timers as well) Please read the follow, and ask any questions. We will all try to help you out. Anyone who has a link that might be useful, feel free to post it.

SEARCH

If it's a breaking news topic, check breaking news first, it's probably already posted. Don't try to be the first one with the story, you've already been beaten by about eight threads.

To avoid duplicate posts, please search before posting. Use the published article title to prevent duplicates. The best method to search is to pick a key word or two from the title. If the article you are posting is, "Dan Rather Memo", start with 'Memo' for the key word. If it is a hot topic, you might want to use two or more keywords, in this case, try 'memo rather'. For an effective search, select 'match all words' and select 'order by post time'.

Search Memo

Vanities and General Interest.

General/Chat

All non-sourced non-news threads are posted here. All fluff stories are posted here. We are a political forum, not a pit bull, SUV or porno site. Keep your threads to a political nature. There are of course exceptions, but post those to the General/Chat forum. This doesn’t mean your one thought is a thread by itself, and your vanities should be substantial to be considered a news forum thread. Others will be moved to the various forums. Lately, we have been seeing articles posted that should be comments made on the main article. Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General/Chat. Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic.

Bloggers & Personal

For all of you who have blogs or personal web sites or personal news or opinion or forum sites that you would like to discuss or promote on Free Republic, here's the place to do it.

Our new Bloggers & Personal forum is for:

Click on the "Bloggers & Personal" forum link on the Forums sidebar of the latest posts pages.

And lastly, please bookmark this excerpt only list, Jim updates frequently.

Updated FR Excerpt and Link Only or Deny Posting List due to Copyright Complaints

Don't think you are being sly or tricky, the mods have seen every trick in the book, so don't try to get around the posting rules with creative antics, your thread will be deleted. We have these rules for a reason. We want Free Republic to be on the internet, not shut down by liberals trying to silence our voices. Please, if you post an article and get an excerpt rule, follow it.

We will pull unlinked threads that might violate the excerpt rules.

The date is from 2002 and it's missing some vital knowledge, i.e. stune, beeber, scarmbled, series, hugh, etc

I would appreciate the update. I was beginning to think many FReepers talked too fast to use spellcheck. What is series?

I'm serious. And thank you, hispanarepublicana for post # 204. I've been looking for the italics button for months now.

This looks like a vanity post to me. Shouldn't this be moved out of breaking news and into general chat?

Absolutely... it's kind of like a DIMRAT to do the whole "do as I say, not as I do thing". I guess whatever the Admin thinks though...

What about the rule to post a vanity to breaking news upon signing up to announce your arrival? ...a longstanding tradition on FR, right?

Uh, oh. I didn't do that. Did I break a rule? Please don't ban me!

You gave great instructions.

If anyone did not understand you,
he will have a chance again with
this post:

<I> Italic </I>
<B> Bold </B>
<U> Underline </U>
<S> Strikethrough </S>
<P> starts a new paragraph.

For instance, I write blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. <P>

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. <P>

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, ...

SEARCH

If the powers-that-be were really serious (er, "series") about this, they would at least put a reminder on the Post Article page about it. Even better, put a Search link on the Post Article page to encourage it. Better yet, put the Search functionality (the input box, etc.) right there ON the Post Article page.

Better still, they wouldn't leave it to chance. They'd institute at least a simple automatic search to determine if an article with a similar title was already posted, and give the poster a chance to avoid posting the duplicate.

Or, just continue to let FReepers police themselves. :O)

This is a test of the HTML functions, for use on Free Republic.

This is a test sentence with different font settings.

We'll see how it works.

    One for the road.

This worked well. I could not view the HTML in Outlook Express, but I did copy what I created there, pasted it into the Netscape Editor, viewed that in HTML, copied it and pasted that into the FR posting window.

It worked.

If you know a way to view the HTML code in Outlook Express, that would save a step.

Thanks very much.

I found it. I hadn't tried the right click, which I use all the time. There it was, view source.

Excellent.

Your tip was very helpful and I appreciate it.
