I say that we start a drive to get Democrats to smoke MORE! If we can just make anti smoking a big republican issue and have George Bush start to talk about how bad smoking is, I bet Dems will take up smoking in hoards!
Then we can get Bolton to start an anti smoking crusade at the UN and have Cheney go out to all the colleges to rant against smoking. I think it would work!

I was thinking of starting a fund to provide MSM with smokes.

Treatments are few once lung cancer is diagnosed, but there is one very obvious, but often very difficult, way to reduce your risk of getting lung cancer -- quit smoking, reported WCVB-TV in Boston.I need some data for this. Cardiovascular problems decrease, sure. But, at least the studies in the 70's and 80's that I was familiar with don't show that quitting reduces lung cancer risk, IIRC. Correction is welcome.

"But then he quit again, and I think the message, perhaps his legacy, is that it is possible to quit smoking, and you should keep trying, and it's never too late," Rigotti said.

Uh...apparently, it was too late for Mr. Jennings.

"You hear about it all the time, it just never sinks in, but for some reason (Monday) it just sunk in. I've got to do something about that soon," said smoker Kraig Ravioli. Headlne should be:

it is possible to quit smoking Sure. I did it not once, not twice, but FOUR TIMES!
( the last time in 1984).

I couldn't have said it better myself. Celebrities are obsessed with the idea that we live our lives through them. Like Katie Kouric's stupid colonoscopy!
Personally, I've found inner peace by living vicariously through Sponge Bob. He doesn't smoke and doesn't even have a colon!

In 6 days, it will be 6 yrs that I quit smoking.
Quit cold turkey.
I kick myself for even ever starting such a dirty, disgusting habit.

That is brilliant! You could make it work, too, if you could get the cigarette companies to cooperate.

"It is the most common form of cancer, responsible for 28 percent of all cancer deaths."
I thought skin cancer was the most common form of cancer, but that the death rate is low because most skin cancer cases are basil cell carcinoma which is particularly treatable.

Aug 14th 1976 was my cold turkey day. I quit on my wedding day at the urging of my soon-to-be wife. We had dated three years but she asked for this special wedding gift which was a gift to both of us!
Congrats to you!

From a libertarian view point (small "l" libertarian) - the use of tobacco is legal. Individuals are responsible for their own actions.
If governments and health organizations were serious about the effects of smoking, they'd outlaw tobacco growing and sales. This would take the responsibility away from individuals.
However, there is an issue of tax receipts - more addicting than tobacco.
My own two cents are that as long as ill effects are known and governments allow tobacco product sales, governments are the ones responsible and should be held so in the damage suits.

Interesting in this day and age that the reporter could talk to someone with no Internet presence. A Google search finds no references to a Kraig Ravioli. No track-meet results, blogs, arrests, tax records, etc.
Maybe, just maybe, he's related to Heywood Jablome or Phil Latio, other "real people" whose names have appeared in newspapers.

Six years and 45 days ago for me . . . we quit within a couple months of each other.
It is not easy and I must have tried to quit at least a dozen times before it stuck, but it is a lot easier than croaking on butts and the day-in-day-out harrassment I suffered.

Cig companies are so put upon they'll do anything anyone tells them to.
I mean, how many companies are required by law (or judicial fiat, which is close enough for liberals) to advertise that people should not buy their products?
