BRITAIN might charge Islamic clerics with treason if they incited violence or praised suicide attacks as part of a security crackdown in the wake of the July London bombings, newspapers reported today.
State prosecutors and senior police are due to meet this week to discuss what charges could be brought against preachers whose endorsement of the suicide attacks could incite further acts of terrorism, the Daily Telegraph reported.
It said one option was to charge them with treason, which carries a life sentence in jail, or to deport them.
On Friday, Prime Minister Tony Blair said he wanted sweeping new powers to expel foreign nationals who incited terrorism, to shut down mosques breeding fanaticism and blacklist extremist clerics, websites and bookshops.
Mr Blair has argued his proposals reflected a new mood in the country and has said the "rules of the game" were changing.
His proposals are in response to the London bombings on July 7, when four British Muslims killed themselves and 52 others on three underground trains and a bus.
A second similar attack exactly two weeks later killed nobody as the bombs failed to explode, but caused panic.
The Telegraph report said British-based cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed was among three people who would come under official scrutiny. In an interview with Reuters, Bakri has described al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden as "a sincere man who fights against evil forces".
Bakri, a Syrian-born cleric who also holds Lebanese citizenship, may return to Lebanon to avoid any charges, according to a report on the website of the Asharq al-Awsat newspaper. He could not be reached for comment.
The BBC said the speeches and broadcasts of Bakri and two others would be checked to see if they could lead to treason charges. No one at the Attorney General's office could be reached for comment.
Some British newspapers have campaigned since the July attacks for the Government to adopt a tougher stance towards what they call the "preachers of hate".
An editorial in the bestselling Sun newspaper said today that "Bakri and his crew can't be booted out of Britain soon enough".
Three of the four main suspects in the botched July 21 attacks are due in court today charged with attempting to murder passengers on the capital's transport system.
Where they'll spend a lifetime converting other vermin that will be paroled and cause further mayhem, just as they do (convert) over here. A pathetic loss of will on the part of the West. In this war of Islam against the Christian West we're doomed!
That would seem to include every Muzzie that reads the queeran!

Blair needs to give Bush a stiff talking to about the "religion of peace," the unreliability of his pals at CAIR, and the peril of out of control immigration.
Can't they just shoot them? Life in prison would just net them more recruits, and deporting them might not keep them from sneaking back in.
You got it ... treason is treason, whether you preach it from a street corner or from a mosque. These people hide behind religion as an excuse to preach hate and incite murder ... time to get tough and I am proud of Blair for taking a stand. Bush needs to follow suit, and I am sure that if another major attack happens in American, he will.
What about Lord HawHaw Galloway?
Bush knows. Let's not forget, there has not been a successful attack in America since 9-11. He responded to 9-11 with taking out the governments in both Afghanistan and Iraq, Lebanon has come clean and both Syria and Iran are in the crosshairs. The next attack could see some BIG changes in the way the U.S. deals with this "religion".
"Bush needs to follow suit, and I am sure that if another major attack happens in American, he will."
Why wait?
Yeah, I know and agree. Why should we wait for the "next one"? It's all political which is ridiculous, this is a war. It's a tough call for Bush and I keep wondering when the kid gloves will come off. I think he responded appropriately to 9-11 but we all know this "religion" is getting out of control and we need to be proactive, not reactive. It's frustrating for us and for him too, I guess.
This sort of thing can be done and has been done in the past.
Very good find, Inyokern!
So this thing has been done before (and not just the Japanese thing).
hmmmm, if a precedent already exists .....
Wish we could charge a few of our own with treason. durbin, kennedy, newsweek and some others in the msn who seem to have done all they could to incite terrorists (or insurgents as they like to call them) come to mind.
Not only did we do it, but it worked. Anarchism in the United States was crushed.
As you know, we strive to be pc here at FR. Those are not towels that the adherents of TROP wear on their empty heads, but small sheets. Henceforth all who were formerly known as towelheads shall now be called 'Sheetheads'.
"Blair needs to give Bush a stiff talking to about the "religion of peace," the unreliability of his pals at CAIR, and the peril of out of control immigration."
As shown by what? I have not heard Bush promising to seal the borders, round up illegal immigrants, close mosques, withdraw CASH support of the PA, seal Iran/Iraq border, or anything else that would show he was given a strong tongue lashing by Blair.
It is still peace with the religion of peace time here in the USA.
whew ... wish we could do this now. Problem is Bush is cowtowing to the PC crowd instead of doing what he said he would do ... get the persons and/or nations doing this or helping those that do. I understand why he can't do this, but sometimes we need to do what is not popular to protect ourselves. Like I said earlier, it's a frustrating situation.
LOL!! PC strikes again! =)
Blair said he wanted sweeping new powers to expel foreign nationals who incited terrorism, to SHUT DOWN MOSQUES breeding fanaticism
Hello Washington. Come in Washington. Are you there? Now THIS is an idea whose time has come!
Why must he wait for another attack on U.S. soil to do the right thing?
