NATO to send plane to protect Pope in Germany
BRUSSELS, Aug 10 (Reuters) - NATO will send an AWACS surveillance aircraft to help protect Pope Benedict during his visit to Germany this month, an alliance official said on Wednesday.
"At the request of the German government, NATO has agreed to provide security support for the Pope's visit to Cologne by providing the AWACS aircraft," the official said.
The Pope plans to attend an event to celebrate World Youth Day in the German city from Aug. 18 to Aug. 21. (snip)

This is the most defeating thing I have ever seen.
I wish there was a way to get everyone to read that report, but practically nobody will look.
Recently, I've utterly lost respect for some long time Freepers who have pointedly refused to look at it and flamed me with the tinfoil hat crap.
Makes me wish this was a big hall and we were live so I could belt some of them.
Out in the general forum, FReepers are flaming each other over this candidate or that, but the fact appears to be that they are all chosen by this Council.
It will not matter if we have Rice or Hillary, Cheney or Kerry, it will all go the same way.
Even if there was a strong patriotic third party run, it will only tip the game in favor of the worst of the two chosen ones.
Want to get sick?

Okay, I would dispute Seattle as a primary target. For what? Microsoft? Don't think so. Even Boeing is no longer there. The military assets are either constantly deployed forward (1st SF Group and the 2nd Ranger have their HQ's nearby but no in Seattle, but they're never at home anyway. Bremerton Shipyard is mostly for mothballed ships. The port of Seattle does business with Asia, but nothing like the activity at the Ports in South Florida do with South America. I could see a device being brought into the country thru Seattle, but not the city of granola crunchers being the target.
Certainly the other cities you mention are potential targets and would wreak a lot of devastation. But notice they are all coastal or border cities and they are LARGE cities. Yes they offer the biggest body count for the BANG but I think that to truly strike terror into the Heartland there must be significant damage to the interior of the country. What the RATs refer to as fly-over country. Small town America is the very backbone of our nation. There is a lot of vital infrastructure there, which, come to think of it, I won't mention in detail in case there are Jihadi lurkers....
LONDON FINANCIAL AREA MAY BE TERROR TARGET
8/10/2005, 11:11 a.m. ET
By MICHAEL McDONOUGH
The Associated Press
LONDON (AP) A terrorist strike against London's financial district is inevitable and would-be attackers already have surveyed the area for possible targets, the area's chief of police said Wednesday.
But James Hart, commissioner of the City of London police, said there was no specific intelligence about a forthcoming attack and that officers had succeeded in disrupting some hostile surveillance activities in the district.
"We are vulnerable, there are people out there who wish us harm and we should be aware of that," Hart told The Associated Press. "If you hit the financial center of the United Kingdom, it's a high-profile thing to do."
Asked if it was a question of when the district would be struck, rather than if, Hart replied: "Yes, I don't doubt that at all."
London's financial quarter houses hundreds of banks, insurance companies, law firms and other institutions including the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England.
Aldgate subway station, one of the targets of the July 7 suicide bombings that killed 56 people including the four attackers, lies on the eastern edge of the City of London, a dense network of narrow streets dotted with skyscrapers.
The tiny district has its own police force distinct from the Metropolitan Police that operates in the rest of the capital and officers increased security there in the 1990s after a string of IRA bombs.
Hart said police had "no specific intelligence to direct toward an attack on the City," as the district is known. But he added: "We are always vulnerable as a financial center, as we have been for the last three decades."
Hart also said "most successful terrorist operatives pre-survey their targets." Asked if this had happened in the City, he answered: "It has already occurred" but added that officers had disrupted "hostile surveillance."
He refused to say whether officers had arrested anyone as a result of these operations or to give further details.
Hart said his officers also were involved in training people working in the City including company security guards and receptionists to look for the signs of people behaving suspiciously.
The commissioner, who first spoke of the threat in comments published in Wednesday's Financial Times, said it was misleading to discuss any particular groups that might be planning an attack. "There is a range of people who wish us harm and we should continually be aware that individuals acting by themselves and perhaps people with affiliates would like to prosecute terror attacks in somewhere as prominent as the City of London."
