The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Was Bomber's "New York" Shirt A Message?
Full Story

It's hardly a unique fashion statement for a mass transit rider: a Yankees-style cap, and a "New York" sweat shirt.

But the New York Police Department is teaming with British authorities to determine whether those items were worn by suspects in the London terror cases to send a "purposeful message" to the city, according to an NYPD officials.

David Cohen, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of intelligence, raised the concern earlier this week at a security briefing for business leaders at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan.

The 9/11 commission was a bad idea.

IMHO the 9/11 commission members were a farce. Average Americans (set up like a jury room) could and would have done the victims a far more adequate and satisfying job.

The Sandy Berger equation proves corruption and taints the results. I don't know how those involved with protecting Sandy Berger can sleep with a clean conscience at night! Removing and destroying evidence is criminal - no matter who does it, who ordered it, or who is protected by it.

I don't have a firm opinion on the plane crash, there is enough to make me think of terrorism.

Last news said 45 kids.

Has anyone heard what countries the passengers were from?

There is a heavy Israel alert, remember the tourist ships?

On the big thread, there was a poster that remarked on the holes that were found drilled in the bathroom wall/into the cockpit? I assume to be used for this very type of accident.

I have already found a communist report that says the military shot the plane down, to protect a U.S. Ship in the area.......more commie/muslim working together, against us.

If that plane was full of folks from Israel or the U.S., then my vote is for terrorism.

I heard on the Pennsylvania plane crash that it ran out of
gas, wasn't it taking off.

Centennial has had another accident saturday night, near
Denver, a Cessna, from Littleton Colorado.

The airport manager, said that just because there had been 4 accidents at Centennial since December, there is no reason to think it is an unsafe airport.

Ok, I will accept that, if they let me do the check up on all the mechanics.

The new crash was on the KOA news from Denver, as I typed it.

If i stay up late, will check it again, but for the next 3 hours, it is Dr. Bill on KGO radio.

Are we going to have a flurry of bad gas in airplanes.

Now when I listen to the KGO traffic report, I listen carefully, as about a month ago, the 'sweet young thing' gave the entire traffic report including:

"On ____freeway, be careful of the naked man, who is walking on the right shoulder of the freeway."

I was proud of her, she did not change her voice, it was just 'another traffic warning'.......LOL

Me too. It does nothing to make me feel more secure about flying. Whoever makes these rules must have had a liquid lunch or dinner over which these items were discussed.

The 9/11 commission was a bad idea. Publishing how little we know about our enemy does not help our cause IMO.

That's a very good point.

The passengers were mostly Greek.

It is said the pilot was not in the cabin.
Where would the pilot go during a crisis?

My first thought when I heard it, was remembering back to the reports we saw here on TM about someone trying to drill through the lavatory door of a plane to possibly put a disabling chemical into the cockpit.

LOL at the traffic reporter not doubling over with laughter at her report.
So ok, if it was depressurization...how does a plane become depressurized?

If the pilot wasn't in the cockpit and the co-pilot was blue and unconscious, why did the fighter pilots see people trying to enter the cockpit? why weren't they disabled?

Too many questions...

Too many plane crashes.

I'd check the mechanics too.

And what was put in the cargo hold.

"Saudi exile runs terror Web site"

LONDON, Aug. 14 (UPI) --

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Muhammed al-Massari's site offered tips on how to get into Iraq, as well as the finer points on which knife was most effective for beheadings.

The site, www.tajdeed.net, is part of what is called the "electronic jihad." Visitors are told to pray that Allah "grant his mujaheddin victory over...the Jews, the Americans and the apostates."

Also included on the site: a "top 10" list -- with film clips -- of Iraqi insurgent attacks, and information on night-vision equipment, the Sunday Times of London reports."

Saudi exile runs urban warfare website in UK

No doubt it's all about urban warfare of peace. From the TimesOnline, with thanks to Scaramouche:

A PROMINENT London-based Saudi dissident, Muhammed al-Massari, is running a website that features a guide to urban warfare for potential terrorists.
In a series of video and audio clips, the Beginner’s Guide for Mujahed gives detailed advice on physical training, the surveillance of enemy targets and operational tactics.

It features footage of an Arab instructor who recommends would-be holy warriors to invest in a knife for self-defence, saying: “Of course, this knife is mainly for stabbing and is not suitable or good for beheadings.”

Referring to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Al-Qaeda’s leader in Iraq whose followers murdered the British hostage Ken Bigley by slitting his throat, the instructor adds: “As far as beheadings are concerned, we ask our brothers to seek Abu Musab’s advice on this issue as he has more experience in this.”

Another section focuses on the use of binoculars and night vision equipment for the surveillance of “human enemy or enemy targets or vehicles”.

The instructor implores Allah to “grant his mujaheddin victory over . . . the Jews, the Americans and the apostates”.

An audio segment of the course posted on the website’s discussion forum advises that urban warfare is best conducted by several terrorist cells that may share a leader but should remain unknown to each other in case members are captured. One cell should stake out a target, another should acquire military equipment or explosives, and a third should actually mount the attack.

Massari’s website, www.tajdeed.net, also hosts a Hollywood-style film presenting a gory “top 10” of attacks by insurgents on westerners in Iraq and provides helpful tips for fighters trying to gain entry to the country.

A fatwa by Massari supporting “martyrdom operations”, which was originally posted on his website in 2002, was still accessible last week....

The 58-year-old Saudi exile, who lives in Wembley, north London, arrived in Britain in 1994 and has continuously campaigned for the replacement of the Saudi royal family by an Islamic regime.

And evidently no one in Britain saw such a call as having any implications for the long-term security of Britain itself.

The delegation will also visit the Army's units and military training centers in order to boost the two countries' military relations.

"Serve and protect with one arm tied behind their back"
Debra Saunders (archive)

August 15, 2005 |

ARTICLE SNIPPET:

"Those charges have been hurled at Los Angeles police officers, who, on July 10, shot to death 19-month-old Suzie Marie Pena -- because her father Jose Raul Pena held the child as a human shield as he fired a stolen semiautomatic handgun toward police.

Pena had wounded one officer during a two-and-a-half-hour standoff. What's more, police had managed to rescue Suzie Marie's 17-year-old sister, who had called the police because Pena was threatening her, and he did fire his gun toward her.

Were the police supposed to wait until Pena killed one of them before they stormed into the auto repair shop office?

Of course, the baby's death is a tragedy for her, as well as her mother, sister and brothers. It is also a tragedy for the police who shot at Pena and the child. (Police say they can't determine which officer fired the shot that killed the toddler.)

Still, Police Chief William J. Bratton has been clear that all fault lies with the father -- "a cold-blooded killer," who doomed his baby girl when he used her as a human shield while continuing to fire at the authorities.

As a nearby business owner confirmed to the Los Angeles Times, "The guy was shooting at (police) all the time. Bullets were pinging off cars. … This guy was no innocent bystander."

Lawyers for the baby's mother, Lorena Lopez, demanded a federal investigation. Demonstrations followed. U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles, issued a statement in which she wondered why professional sharp-shooters "could not have disabled this supposed crazy and confused man."

Last week, the FBI announced it had launched a probe into the shooting."

"New scam asks people to fax away data"
Published: August 11, 2005, 7:48 AM PDT
By Dawn Kawamoto
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Phishers have added a new lure to their tackle boxes: e-mails that ask people to fax sensitive information to bogus security investigators.

In a new scam, attackers are sending e-mail warnings that appear to come from PayPal, security specialist Sophos said Wednesday. These e-mails say that someone tried to reset the recipient's password and asks him or her to participate in an investigation.

The e-mails direct people to a Microsoft Word document hosted on a Web site and urges them to download the form, fill it out, and fax it to a toll-free number, Sophos said. The form asks for credit card information.

The new tactic comes as people are becoming more suspicious of e-mails asking them to fill out sensitive information online, said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant for Sophos."
