A day (actually 2 yrs) in the life of President Bush (8/6/05): many photos

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: With the President, First Lady and the dogs relaxing at the ranch this weekend, there are no new photos to post. So I've selected a theme -- GWB and our Armed Forces -- and found many photos to let us enjoy a walk down memory lane. The theme photos are all from early in his presidency. They show GWB's closeness with our military both before and after 9/11/01.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

Monday, the President travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will be touring the Sandia Laboratory there, and then will be making remarks after signing the comprehensive energy legislation that passed recently.

Tuesday, the President is going to have his economic advisors to the ranch. He will participate in a briefing with them on the state of our economy. Afterwards, GWB will make some remarks and participate in a press availability.

Wednesday, President Bush will traveling to Aurora, Illinois, where he will sign the transportation legislation. Aurora is the largest town in the north-central Illinois congressional district of House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Saturday, tentative, but the President usually participates in an RNC event in August at the ranch. As of yesterday, the President's schedule was not firmed up beyond Wednesday.

QUOTE OF THE DAY Excerpt from the presidential radio address, Saturday, August 6, 2005:

As families across the country enjoy the summer, Americans can be optimistic about our economic future. In the past four years, our economy has been through a lot: we faced a stock market decline, a recession, corporate scandals, an attack on our homeland, and the demands of an ongoing war on terror.

To grow the economy and help American families, we acted by passing the largest tax relief in a generation. And today, thanks to the tax relief and the efforts of America's workers and entrepreneurs, our economy is strong and growing stronger.

This past week, we learned that America added over 200,000 new jobs in July. Since May of 2003, we've added nearly 4 million new jobs. The unemployment rate is down to 5 percent, below the average of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. And more Americans are working today than ever before in our nation's history.

We need to make the tax relief permanent, end the death tax forever, and make our tax code simpler, fairer and more pro-growth.

...his mom doing this she must be flaming Liberial way before he enlist in the miltary...

Yes, that's true. While on a human level, we can all sympathize with her loss, turning her son's death into a silly political circus in Crawford, Texas, is beyond foolish. If she's a life-long Leftist, she probably didn't want her son to enlist, and may well have even thought of him as something of a disappointment. Now she wants to use his death for cheap political theater.

Hi ya, There are exceptions but by and large teachers
are liberal to far left. Also their union is way left
and fund and support liberals who run for office.
In the early 1960s when I was finishing school, all my
teachers were very liberal except for a few who happened
to be WWII vets.
It made no difference the subject. I was down graded
because I wouldn't go along with the everything from
pro Castro to pro unions, pro democrat prezs, etc.
ie. in English had to do an autobiography bookreport.
At that time Gen. Douglas MacArthur's book had come out.
Admire him and did a report, wooo, major notes all over
the report on was a terrible person he was , etc.

Rather than carp on about it to the press he actually resigned there and then.

That's one thing I do like about your political system, snugs. Politicians will resign on principle, and the parliamentary system seems to produce a higher turnover in the political class. Here, they just stay on and on and on making pains in the butt out of themselves literally for generations.

What a terrific photo. Thanks for reminding us

Between the Immigration threads, the Walmart is the devil threads and that Sheehen woman I have been in an angry funk all day. I'm not prone to that kind of mood, and quite frankly, I don't like it.

And then, I see this picture. Good timing. Thanks. Now, what can we do to turn this ugly-train around? This is really frustrating.

I recall the son's quoted words to be something like" I don't want to go, but I signed up for it, so I am going"....

If this were a drafted soldier, you could see her behavior differently. However, this was a volunteer. He took the bennies and the risks.

Now can't she see that her son has fulfilled his committment and whether SHE agreed with his decision or not, she should support her son's decision and not further embarass him.

I am sure he does not approve of her conduct, in death as in life.
Young men don't like their mamas doing that to them.

That is a GREAT, GREAT photo, OWF. So heartwarming. Don't you just hate how the MSM refuses to cover the positives in Iraq? Today they were all blathering about their latest mantra -- that the President is "hemorrhaging" support from the American people for his Iraq policies. Even heard it on the supposed fair and balanced Fox News. Never do they inform their viewers that the polls are BIASED as heck, with significantly higher percentages of Democrat respondents to Republicans.

In fact, since minority parties rarely get more than 1% or 2% of the vote nationwide, if you figure so-called independents actually break roughly 48%-48% Dem vs. Rep, that just further skews poll results in the Dems' favor.

...do Crawford Cops have reputation of going LAPD smackdown on protesters...

Probably not. Crawford is a very small town in a rural area. The 70 or so Leftist dimbulbs who showed up there today are almost all from New York, the San Francisco area, and other non-rural areas. There's a misconception among those types (fed by Hollywood) that southern cops are all dumb, not up-to-date on their police practices, and/or corrupt.

I think the dimbulbs who showed up in Crawford today were quickly shown the error of their ways by those "hick" cops.

He remained in the commons but resigned from his position as leader of the house, though he remained vocal in his opposition of the government somehow here I felt that he was more honest than the majority of Labour MPs.

Though he opposed his own party's policy on Iraq I believe he truly felt that as a Labour MP that it was really against the true beliefs of his party to support such an effort so I do not view him as a traitor and back stabber to his party but rather as someone who truly believed they had left their principles and roots.

These MPs went along like sheep with Blair but I do not believe this were there real beliefs or the people who actually voted for them in the first place and neither IMHO did Robin Cook and that is why he felt he could no longer sit on the front bench with them and resigned and returned to the back benches.

One may not have agreed with him but one has to acknowledge that at least politically he kept to his principles.

No. Barney wasn't even in the background the other day at the press conference of President Bush and the President of Columbia. Maybe it was too hot and the dogs preferred to stay in the air conditioned house.

Well .. how nice. I've been thinking .. I hope this isn't too difficult. If it is, just let me know, but I would really really like a brand new BMW 760Li, in metallic pewter or silver .. with a picture of W on the front side door and Rummy on the back side door. It's only about $118,000, and I figure I'm virtually worth it in my fantasies .. LOL.

You have an excellent point. We naturally want to sympathize with the woman's loss. But it's easy to lose sight of the fact that not all families are close. We don't know the relationship between that mother and son. Many young people join the service because it's the only way they can get a higher education or learn a useful trade. Many others join to get away from an unhappy home life. We can't assume that this mother and son got along in life, or that he would want her using his death in this way.

Well said, snugs. I agree with you. The people both here and in your country would be far better served if more politicians behaved as Cood did.
