TAVARES -- A father who accused a Mount Dora policeman last year of dumping out his infant daughter's cremated remains sued the city and the officer Monday. Filed in Lake Circuit Court, the lawsuit accuses the city and Officer Brad Cline of illegally stopping and searching Jason Burnham, 34, as he was walking home after Hurricane Charley. During the stop, Burnham's suit says, Cline emptied the ashes from a cross-shaped pendant worn by Burnham, suspecting it contained cocaine. "This is probably the most mean-spirited violation of a person's civil rights that I have seen in many years,"

I remember a scene from a movie years ago where two cops thought perp was hiding dope in an ern. One cp dipped his finger in the ern and tasted it.....then said; tastes like China White. The perp said no, it was actually his mother.

My dad asked me to use a vase as an ashtray as I was on vacation for 2 weeks. The next vacation, I spotted the vase, sealed with wax and asked him what had happened. He said that when asked about it, he told everybody it was his sons ashes.

The cop poured the ashes onto the hood of the car & then brushed them onto the ground after seeing is wasn't drugs? Why in the world would he do that? How did he even know the guy had a anything inside the cross necklace? Crazy.

On the surface it seems a strange thing to be carrying around with you as you are walking around. Given he was going home after the hurricane, I suppose it would make sense that he would have his most valued posession on him at the time.

Why in the world would he do that?

Why do they Taser 9-year-olds?

Same answer. Unfortunately, many cops have an "us vs. them" attitude these days. In some ways, I don't blame them, in others.....

You will notice that this guy is no longer actively on the force, although he still does "undercover" work.

Not saying that I have this opinion, but some people are beginning to wonder whether it's putting on the gun and badge that turns cops into punks; or whether it is the punk in some people that makes them want to put on the gun and badge.

The cop had a fine case of Drug Warrior Attitude. When Congress gives you a special exemption from Constitutional rihts of the accused, plus carte blanche to steal private assets without due process whenever you feel like it, this kind of thing is going to happen.

A couple of years ago, some burglars thought the container labeled "Charlie" was cocaine, and
started snorting it.

The homeowners were sort of taken aback at the ashes spread over the table or counter, mentioning to police that
the burglars must have been pretty thorough to sift through the dog's ashes. The cops looked at the pattern in the
ashes, looked at the urn, and looked at the name on the urn, and explained that "Charlie" was slang for cocaine.

Haverhill, MA, ~2002, iirc.

Its not just the cops that get gung ho either, you should see some of the first responders and volunteer firefighters around this town. If it wasn't so damn sad it would be funny.

That begs another question - how can a deceased person's ashes be a "most valued posession"?

Sounds like a morbid inability to "let go". I would be extremely disappointed to know that someone would keep my ashes (or any other form of my body0 aorund after my death. At that time, I'm done with it! The only exception being the donation of any body parts/organs to save another person's life - I'm all for organ donation.
