Cannon declines debate with Colorado rival (Tancredo)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, known for his outspoken and sometimes outlandish views on immigration, will be in Utah later this month and agreed to debate his political rival, Rep. Chris Cannon.

Cannon says he has more pressing engagements - working on the irrigation system at his home.

Tancredo, a Colorado Republican and leading spokesman of the anti-immigration movement, was invited to the state by the group Utahns For Immigration Reform and Enforcement, or UFIRE, a group that battered Cannon over his immigration stance during his 2004 re-election bid.

He agreed to spend Aug. 24 to 25 in the state, making appearances in St. George, Provo and Salt Lake City. On behalf of UFIRE, Bluffdale City Councilwoman Martha Speed invited Cannon to debate Tancredo at an event in Provo on Aug. 24, but Cannon said he will be indisposed.

"Congressman Cannon plans to spend the 24th at home working on his irrigation system,” said his chief of staff, Joe Hunter. “However, given Mr. Tancredo's recent interest in religious sites, we would suggest our visitor from Colorado might want to occupy his time touring [LDS] Temple Square."

The reference to Tancredo's “interest in religious sites” is a dig at recent comments he made in a radio interview that, if Muslim terrorists mount a nuclear strike in the United States, that the United States should retaliate by bombing Muslim holy sites, including Mecca.

“What are we dealing with here, an arrogant jokester?” asked UFIRE chairman Russell Sias.

“Do we disagree with Representative Cannon's stand? Absolutely. But we don't have to set him up. The issues themselves will do that. When you're wrong, you're wrong.”

Cannon's spokesman, Charles Isom, said, “Congressman Cannon is going to engage in this debate on the floor of Congress and he doesn't really see this as a productive way to advance this debate.”

Recently, Tancredo has been visiting presidential primary states trying to force Republican candidates to take a hard-line stance on immigration and, if none does, has not ruled out running himself.

He and Cannon have a rocky past, due to Cannon's support for President Bush's immigration policies, and sponsorship of legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to earn citizenship working in the agricultural industry.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Tancredo only attacks republicans.

It's annoying as heck. Look at Senator Cornyn or Kyl of Arizona leading the charge with legislation and persuasion. Look at Reps Culberson and DeLay of Texas doing their part on border enforcement.

Tancredo is just a sniper in the trees, pretending to shoot at illegals, but really shooting at Republicans.

Tancredo only attacks republicans

Cannon wants to extend the benefits of citizenship to illegal aliens and the children of illegal aliens. Meanwhile other potential immigrants abide by the rules and wait patiently for their chance. Don't you think that's unjust? You don't think Republican Cannon ought to be "attacked" for perpetuating that injustice? Do you think he should be praised for encouraging and rewarding instead? By what principle does that make sense?

Until the Constitution is amended, there's no doubt whatsoever that anyone born in this country, no matter what the status of the parents, are citizens. Cannon's opinion about that doesn't matter. You can be a tourist from Norway and give birth here and your kid is a US citizen.

There's no injustice or justice about it. It's just a fact.

I think Tancredo is the guy who can't shoot straight. He's getting absolutely nothing accomplished while better men than he are in DC actually doing something.

Like I said, Tancredo only attacks republicans, that ought to make anyone with two brain cells go hmmmmmmm.

I am not splitting hairs.

I am not attempting to spin anything. I have stated facts.

You lied when you posted to judgeandjury that a sub-contractor "admitted the illegal were there." I believe that others appreciated the article I posted from the Rocky Mountain News that demonstrated your claim about a supposed comment by the sub-contractor was a lie. It doesn't matter to me how many people read that article. I am happy to have acquired knowledge through my research that enabled me to know that your claim about a supposed comment by the sub-contractor was a lie.

The only proof the left-wing, anti-Republican Denver Post upon which you rely appears to have that illegal aliens helped remodel Cong. Tancredo's home is the word of two (2) illegal aliens. You cannot provide a single story from any media source that quotes Cong. Tancredo as admitting that illegal aliens helped remodel his house.

I'm sure that some people will continue to use the Denver Post story against Cong. Tancredo, including some who hate Cong. Tancredo so much that they must resort to lies to make their points. In the 2004 election, a 527 group paid for a radio ad attacking Cong. Tancredo in which a woman accuses him of using cheap, illegal labor to remodel his home. The woman gave her name and the name of the town in which she lived. Both were a lie, just like you claim of the sub-contractor admitting "the illegals were there." In spite of the attack ad, Cong. Tancredo easily defeated his Demcoratic opponent. The article is below:

Tancredo now in cross hairs of attack ads
By Gabrielle Crist, Rocky Mountain News
October 13, 2004

The group attacking U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave in television ads is now on the hunt for Rep. Tom Tancredo - with a radio ad that began airing Wednesday.

In the ad, a woman is typing a letter to Tancredo. Then the narrator says:

"My husband and I work hard to teach our children the values of acceptance and the evils of racism, which is why we're so disappointed in your conduct.

"You make a career of trying to punish immigrant workers, then turn around and use cheap, illegal labor to remodel your home. It's insulting to us all."

The reference to illegal labor is based on a 2002 allegation that Tancredo's remodeling contractor hired illegal immigrants to complete work on Tancredo's home.

The contractor denied the allegation.

The woman then gives her name and notes she is from Greenwood Village.

Tancredo's campaign manager, Dave Pearson, said there are several problems with the ad. For starters, he said, there is no such woman in Greenwood Village and no active voter registration for anyone under that name.

Beyond that, he said, Tancredo is not a racist.

"The congressman is in favor of strengthening our borders and eliminating illegal immigration," Pearson said. "There is nothing racist or biased in that."

The ads were paid for by a 527 committee, an independent political group that raises money to promote candidates or issues. The committee, called Coloradans for Plain Talk, used to operate under the name Colorado Families First.

It is led by three wealthy Democrats: Jared Polis, Tim Gilland and Pat Stryker.

Last month, the group began airing two controversial anti-Musgrave television ads. The first showed a Musgrave look-alike stealing a watch from a corpse and referred to the Republican congresswoman's vote against barring nursing homes from charging fees after a patient has died.

The second ad featured a Musgrave look-alike picking the pocket of a soldier and referred to her vote to cut veterans' benefits in a preliminary vote in March. Full benefits and a significant funding increase were added in the final budget bill in July, which Musgrave supported.

Some politicos predicted that the Musgrave ads were so harsh they would hurt her Democratic opponent, Stan Matsunaka.

In light of your dislike of Cong. Tancredo and your claim "he comes off wishy-washy, almost feminine," please state what Republican you desire to see capture the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

Do you believe this nation's borders are secure? If not, how do you propose to secure them?

Do you agree with Majority Leader Delay's comments about illegal aliens that he made last Thusday night? Here is a link to an article about those comments: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/politics/3297425 .

Cong. Cannon supports giving in-state tuition to illegal aliens. Do you support giving in-state tuition to illegal aliens?

The illegals worked on Tancredo's house.

Yes, the reporting paper is liberal, but they are not above the law. If Tanc could prove the newspaper article to be false, he would. He can't!

This is a reality that the kooks can't accept.

"What is your solution"

What is politically feasible?

The are 3 guest worker bills currently in congress.

In 500 words or less, name the one that you support and why you support it. Also define the reasons that you are opposed to the other two.

Tancredo's "thing" for Cannon goes back to 2002 when Team America PAC contributed to Cannon's opponent in the primary. TA Pac also contributed to the opponent of another sitting republican but I don't recall which one. Maybe Kolbe.

Cannon's crime was being an original co-sponser of AgJobs.

When Delay, Gingrich, and other pubs went after Tanc for breaking the 11th commandment, Bay Buchanan stepped forward and said that Tanc had noting to do with it. Tanc gave the PAC to her and Pat. Ignore the fact that Tanc's name is used on PAC literature and Tanc actively raises money for the PAC.
