welllllllllllll
if the Injun tribe involved gives it the nod, then NCAA should sod off
See link at bottom of my #39 to how UND responded to 2002 NCAA survey.
About time. Regardless of one's opinion about the use of people as mascots, if the people who represent the mascot endorse the use, then under what premise does the NCAA have for banning it? The Seminole tribe of Florida is proud of their heritage and supports their image being used by the university. So now we are left to wonder, will academic political correctness win out in the courts?

It is all about political correctness but don't confuse NCAA with "academic".
This NCAA anti-Indian mascot position was part of an extensive "review" by the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC).
And guess who backs them?
"The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, the National Education Association, the National Organization for Women and numerous church-affiliated groups also have joined the government agency in calling for the use of American Indian mascots, logos and imagery to end."

Oh for Pete's sake! Go figure there was a PC coalition behind all this. Funny that the article actually mentioned the nature of what is "offensive" to local tribes but that subject apparently didn't matter to the thought police.
Just for everyone's information, TK Wetherell is an FSU grad and is the former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. He is a Democrat.
His son, Kent, went to high school with me here in Daytona Beach, and he was my roommate my first year at FSU (1989-90). TK was the Speaker of the House at the time. Kent is now an administrative law judge.
After getting spanked for the last five games straight by Miami, they should be called the Florida State Squaws.
Incrementally force the universities to succumb to their omnipotent wisdom..........
I say the universities stand up to the NCAA and tell them to shove it. When bowl time comes around, the Indian logoed schools wear their colors!
Lets see now, instead of the Central Michigan Chippewas, how about the CMU sub-yoopers?
So...now the Fighting Sioux can't participate in or host NCAA hockey tournaments?

What about the Fighting Irish. If the use of Indian mascots and nicknames is deemed offensive, then so should Irish be offensive. Why go there? what a can of worms to open. No school should accept this decision.
I never thought I'd say this (and it will probably be the only time I ever do) but "Go Noles!"
Or to simply reflect truth in advertising laws.
I'm proud to be a Fighting Brave and I'm P*$$ED!

The University of Utah is at risk for a name change as well. The "Utes" name and the drum and feather logo are have been deemed offensive.
The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday (8/6/05) read:
Irene Cuch, a tribal leader at the Unitah and Ouray Indian Reservation located about four hours east of Salt Lake City, said the decision should be theirs.
"A non-Indian organization should not be the one to make the decision. This should come from tribal leaders," Cuch said.
She said she is proud of the university naming itself after her tribe as long as the school uses the name in a respectful manner, which she said the school has done.
"The leaders gave permission long ago, and that should be respected," said Constance Eaton, a tribal member who attended the U. for part of her college career. "We are being honored by having our name on a school of higher education."
I think this is more than enough said!!!
