...and he must use rat shot, which will travel only about 25 feet

Never heard of "rat shot". What is it like? A .22 cal shotgun shell?

#9 shot in a .22 shell.

I assume it's what we call 'bird shot' out here, but I may be wrong.

It's a shot shell and shoots nr 11 shot and it shoots a good bit beyond 25 ft. Still, I am amazed it is effective on squirrels.

Exactly. I used to call it snake shot. But with a .22, you need to get right on top of 'em to kill then with one round. There ain't much "shot" there to work with!

It's so dinky that my husband used to shoot mice and rats with it in our kitchen, and the very limited "scatter" barely made dents in the baseboards.

(yeah, yeah, some people would think it's overkill, but it clears up the vermin problem instantaneously)

Yep. In my experience the spread is so wide as to be useless unless you are standing directly over the snake or whatever.

I've heard them referred to as "snake rounds".

Imagine, if you will, a .22LR cartridge (probably with less than a normal load) with half of a gelatin capsule stuffed with very small shot on it in lieu of a bullet.

Lethal to critters but otherwise relatively limited in terms of the damage they can do.

Think I'll give him a ring and ask him if I can bring my Serbu BFG-50 over there and pop a squirrel or two.

They won't mind his .22 after a couple of rounds from THAT.

Oh, and to someone who thought we were a blue city- I don't think so, except for our new police chief who hails from NYC.

It is called birdshot here in CA. Yes, it is a small shot shell for use in 22s and can be used against rats and other pests. If I was this guy I would invest in a really good pellet gun, one with good accuracy and that would solve the noise problem and his idiot neighbors would be unaware that he was still snuffing squirrels. He would benefit from greater range also(altho not much).

.22 rat shot is a small amount of shot crimped into a .22 shell. It is also called bird shot. When you consider that 12 gauge birdshot is pretty much done in 100 yards, this stuff is good for busting balloons at the carnival. A .22 pellet gun would do the squirrel disposal job and would hardly notify the nearest neighbor.

Exactly. Best used in a .22 smooth bore, but usable in any .22. I did my first clay target shooting with a bolt action .22. I hit 4 of 5 targets at a "father son" outing. Which got me enough points for second place. The GIRL who got first just caught a whole passel of little fish. She had been, or was to be, I'm not sure of the exact timing, my "babysitter", although more like my cook, and game playing buddy, in the summers. She was also the daughter of my Dad's best friend. :) I really didn't ming that she beat me, I wouldn't' have wanted the prize she picked anyway, so I still got the "first pick" of the prizes I was interested in anyway. :)

I hadn't seen her for decades, but she came to my Dad's funeral, with her mother and sisters. Her Dad had passed away a few years prior.
