PORTAGE | As friends, family members and strangers paid their respects Thursday to Army Spc. Adam Harting, members of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., prepared to picket the Portage soldier's funeral.

Harting, a 21-year-old Portage native, was killed in Iraq July 25 when an improvised explosive device detonated outside his vehicle.

The 100-member congregation, which announced its decision on Wednesday, demonstrates at military funerals and other events across the nation because it believes the killing of soldiers by such devices and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are God's punishment for society's acceptance of homosexuality.

Fred Phelps and his pack of mad dogs are sick, sick people.

The people of this congregation are no different than the hate-filled, foul-mouthed hippies of the '60s.

We need Tony Blair this morning. This would certainly fall under hate crimes and all could spend some time reflecting behind bars on their actions against the family.

I wish they wouldn't call themselves a "Baptist" church. They sound like a cult. They hold up the name of Jesus to ridicule.

Absolutely. That Phelps creep has infected the congregation with his twisted, schizoid mind.

I hate to advocate violence and perhaps my post will be removed for saying this - but maybe it's time that a group of people beat the living hell out of Fred Phelps and his supporters.

It's one thing to disapprove of the gay lifestyle - and it's a far different thing that Phelps is doing. Denouncing that lifetsyle is one thing - doing so at a soldier's funeral is another.

Normally, you'd ignore a person like Phelps. Turn your back on him and not give him the benefit of an acknowledgement that he's actually been noticed.

However, this has gone way beyond the pale. Sometimes, the only way you can reach out and truly grab someone's attention are in situations like this. Phelps has to realize that he has freedom of speech...but with those rights come sometimes come certain consequences.

Phelps is also a Democrat who ran on the parties ticket for a few seats.

Something you'll never hear Dems admit too.

This is one time that the "Don't ask don't tell" about gay soldiers should be put aside and a group of them come and beat this bunch of idiots.

May God's blessings surround the family, loved ones, and friends of Army Spc. Adam Harting.

There is nothing "Reverend" about Fred Phelps. He is the balsphemous hate-filled leader of hate-filled zealots.

Just so you're clear about this, it has nothing to do with "gay soldiers." Harting was just a soldier doing his job in the $hithole known as Iraq.

It is really disturbing the Baptist Church has not done anything to defrock Phelps. Fred Phelps is clearly a psychopathic personality.

Phelps was disbarred as a lawyer. It is ironic that Phelps was considered so dishonest and unethical that he was unfit to be a lawyer, but he is of sufficient character to be a minister.

Phelps has a history of drug abuse, as reported in the Topeka Courier Journal. Furthermore, Phelps also has a history of domestic violence, including assaulting his wife and beatings of his children.

Phelpos is a dangerous lunatic and the members of his church are a bunch of very stupid mob members.

Sounds like they are psychotics.

I was thinking the same thing too: When are some members of our armed forces going to get fed up and maybe "escort" some of these protestors away? I would love to see that happen.

I'm a Baptist and this story is sickening.

What in the world is wrong with those people? Whatever happened to mourning with those who mourn? Whatever happened to common decency?
