Afghanistan?
Well, after poorly thought -out operations like this, it's easy to wonder exactly where that spear is pointing.
It is hard to blame Israel given their fragility as a nation - in their place I might do the same in the national interest.
That said however, no great nation can allow such behaviour to go unpunished when directed against it (even from an ally and the only fitting sentence should be capital).
While Israel see themselves as an ally of the US which would never knowingly hurt the key US interest so did Britain, yet their carelessness of western secrets cost lives in the Burgess-Maclean scandals. If allied spies get lighter sentences more allies will spy.
Afghanistan isn't exactly the Middle East.
Plainly, what is right is following an American agenda. And IF they are guilty, an approporiate punishment.
So youre accusing Israel of promoting regressive Islamic-like foreign values and tyranny in the West? Id like to see that claim supported.
Do you have any additional information to add?
You echo my position exactly. On the one hand, as a supporter of democracy and as a Jew, I have great sympathy for Israel. On the other hand, as a Jew, I also have great respect for the universality of the law and its necessity, and the importance of a culture of law.
Pollard can continue to rot in jail. Period.
The stories here have changed so much, from (1) CIA/State Department/FBI Arabists to (2) bungling Franklin to (3) two out-of-control AIPAC employees, that I don't think we will see much comment until the case is presented in court.
This is the second Israeli related article that has totally ticked me off this week. Condi better have a "nice talk" with Sharon and the Israeli's. They just might find themselves sitting alone is a sea of Palestinians who want to kill them. Without U.S. support, they would be erased from this earth.
Time to remind them of that!
The Bush administration has greatly increased foriegn aid spending over what Clinton spent because it is in America's global interest to do so.
While Israel used to be the number one recipient of foreign aid assistance in gross dollar terms, Muslim nations now get a much larger share of US spending on foreign aid.
Isreal gets about $2.62 billion while Iraq gets $18.44 billion in foreign aid and Afghanistan gets $1.77 billion. Egypt also gets $1.83 billion and among the top 15 nations receiving foreign aid are also Kazakstan, Pakistan, Turkey, Sudan, and Indonesia.
Well, easy with the disappearing off the face of the earth business. I am certain Israel would find ways to survive without us.
And I don't think the spying is the worst thing in the world. We obviously do it to them. But we also have the same duty to punish it when found out, as it seems is happening now.
Where do ya think Reagan got his Trust But Verify from? ;-)
God will not permit Israel to disappear. Period.
Unless there are some hidden facts, this case is BS from top to bottom.
It's about the type of leaks that go on every day in Washington or the NY Times and Washington Post would have bake sale announcement on their front page.
It's also about entrapment.
I confess, under the same circumstances, I too would be in the dock. And I'm guessing so would many of you with minor change in characters.
A Pentagon analyst- who by the way is not a Jew- believes that Iran is a threat that is not taken seriously by the Administration. He commiserates, with facts, with those who share his concerns.
When the FBI catches him he agrees to entrap the others.
He tells them of an imminent danger- deemed classified- to US and Israeli assets in Iraq.
They in turn, call a reporter, THE ADMINISTRATION, and the Israelis to warn of the plot and danger. To save lives.
Gotcha.
Imagine if a Canadian Government official knew about the forthcoming attack on 9/11 but for some reason his Government was refusing to share the info with the US. He tells you. He also tells you the information is classified in Canada and you can both get in trouble if you pass it on.
Do you pass it on?
I DO.
Well, you are leaving out the part where the AIPAC employees (allegedly) lied to the FBI about Franklin and what he told them and passed to them. That is a big no-no.
Also, individual employees don't get to decide who knows what. That is why they sign agreements when they start working there. What happens when we have 50 Franklins running around, doing what they each think is best?
