Summer of Dove (Media In A Lather Over Soap Models)
Newsweek ^ | 8/3/05 | By Susanna Schrobsdorff

Summer of Dove Are the women in the company’s new ad campaign too big to sell beauty products, or have our minds gotten too small?

Newsweek Updated: 3:13 p.m. ET Aug. 3, 2005 Aug. 3 - Even if you haven’t seen Dove’s "Campaign for Real Beauty," you’ve probably heard about it. The ads promote a new line of skin-firming creams and feature six "regular" women of varying sizes and ethnicities cheerfully posing in plain white underwear. The curvy nonmodel models were introduced by Dove in June, but newspapers across the country are still simmering with dueling diatribes about Dove's selection of women who are neither skinny nor camouflaged in sexy clothes. Everyone seems to have an opinion about whether the women are a revolutionary rejection of the superthin media ideal, or just nice girls who are too chubby to be up on billboards wearing next to nothing.

...

There is a surprising amount of hostility in some reactions to the ads. Lucio Guerrero, a staff reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times who was apparently offended by the sight of the ads on his commute, wrote on July 19: "Really, the only time I want to see a thigh that big is in a bucket with bread crumbs on it."

"It looks like the pictures in post #1 have been stretched horizontally. Was that really necessary?"

I posted it according to the dimensions listed in the properties for the picture. I humbly apologize for any distortion. In fact, the picture you posted is not from the ad campaign. It is the ladies at a public, promotional event. A sample of the ad campaign is in the background. So, perhaps you should exercise some truth in advertising.

"If you'll read the whole article, you'll learn that these ladies aren't anywhere near plus sized."

This is the third sentence of the story: "The curvy nonmodel models." The premise of the article is that these women don't fit the mold (so to speak) of the standard model. It is the subject of the article. If you like this look, I am happy for you. But, don't jump down my throat about it.

Are you denying that you distorted the photos? I reposted the exact same photos, without changing a thing. Look at post #40, and then look at your posting of those photos. You resized them to make them wider.

"Are you denying that you distorted the photos?"

Yes. I posted them according to the properties I found when I right clicked on them. I did not adjust - because I did not want somebody to accuse me of "distorting" them. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the thread.

I posted it according to the dimensions listed in the properties for the picture.

I looked at the original source and you reversed the dimensions. For example 050801_arc_doveAdStacy_tn.jpg is 155 X 200 and your posted is image as 200 X 155. When you post an image using HTML you don't have to include dimensions unless you are trying to size it up or down. It just seemed suspicious since you made them wider! I didn't say my picture was from the ad campaign. I just wanted to post another picture from the link to the article you posted to show how beautiful all of the women were. Sorry if I raised your ire!

So now I know what they are selling.

I have seen many pictures of the girl on the left, but had no idea she was selling Dove.

At least I knew they were selling beauty products. My wife, kept wondering about the "Girl in the Diaper".

LOL

Thank you for the suggestion. I agree the women do look quite nice in the picture you posted. I think I get touchy near the end of the day. Take Care.

I hadn't seen these signs in Las Vegas but I was in NYC in mid-July and saw them all over the place. Disgusting! I am a strong advocate of young, fit, goodlooking women in states of undress.

This ad campaign is stomach turning! :-)

Oh cut it out. You distorted them. The dimensions are 155 X 200, and 155 X 194 respectively. If you posted them without changing the dimensions, they would appear as they do in post #40.

Here is the code I used: <img src="http://img.slate.msn.com/media/1/123125/2065969/2111765/2123729/050801_arc_doveAdStacy_tn.jpg"> <img src="http://img.slate.msn.com/media/1/123125/2065969/2111765/2122290/050801_arc_doveAd_tn.jpg">

You used something like this: <img src="http://img.slate.msn.com/media/1/123125/2065969/2111765/2123729/050801_arc_doveAdStacy_tn.jpg" width="200" height="155"> <img src="http://img.slate.msn.com/media/1/123125/2065969/2111765/2122290/050801_arc_doveAd_tn.jpg" width="194" height="155">

Could it be because the NY Ad execs prefer young boys?

I do believe you're on to something there...

I know what you mean. The second from the right made my peepers pop out on cartoon-style springs, too. Wow!

I may be in a minority here but I think real women are often very beautiful. Grossly obese women are not but starved stick-figures are a turn-off too.

"Oh cut it out. You distorted them."

Cut me some slack Smokey the Bear. I tried to post an interesting and provocative thread. Sorry if the photos came out distorted. But that was not my intent. Scouts Honor. If I was going to do that, I would have used a pic of Helen Thomas.

OUCH!!! Perish the thought!

Looks like you when you posted the photos, you switched the height and width around. If you omit the dimensions it posts the default. See my previous post where I showed the code I used. It's easier than the code you used, but doesn't allow you to enlarge or shrink the photo.

You're welcome. And here's a lovely photo of Helen Thomas, just to show an example of when resizing can be preferable.

Somewhere out there is a marketing researcher who proudly told Dove, "You know, fat chicks spend a lot of money on beauty products and there are a lot of fat chicks out there these days..."

If the researcher has a Harvard MBA he would probably come up with the average consumption of a customer in terms of bars per square-foot-year.
