IT IS TIME for Democrats to stop moaning about John Roberts and John Bolton and start doing something productive -- such as figuring out how to win elections.
Even though Democrats continue to resist the outcome, George W. Bush won the 2004 presidential contest. His reelection triggered a time-honored cliche: To the victor, go the spoils. Bush selected a Supreme Court nominee and an ambassador to the United Nations who reflect his philosophy. Any Democratic president would do the same.
......Democrats continue to fight the last campaign, while Republicans are planning for the next two. While the Democrats are busy bashing Bush -- a second-term president who is not running for anything -- the Republicans are working on their strategy for victory in 2006 and 2008. Ken Mehlman, the Republican National Committee chairman, continues the GOP outreach to Latino and African-American voters. Dividing up the Democratic base and conquering even a small piece of it helps Republicans in future elections and hurts Democrats.
......Sniping about Bush's vacations and workout schedule is not a long-range strategy for Democratic success. Winning on election day is what it takes to derail nominees like Bolton and Roberts.

This theory has fascinated me since college. I am a Gen Xer and I remember all of my professors waxed about the sixties. My favorite moment was when a professor showed The Graduate to the students as part of the "education" process.
At times I wanted to laugh and at times I felt sorry for these people who were basically stuck in a time warp.
I just could not imagine myself as a professor showing movies like Singles or Reality Bites to my students for any educational purpose.
My "coming to age" years were wonderful, but my life is wonderful today and though I miss the companionship I had with so many great friends at that time, I would not trade my life with my wife and son for anything. The best part is that on occassion, I do see those friends and we remember the past, but we also talk about the present.
Change does happen, those that adapt quicker will succeed.
I am sooooooo glad this little turd, Hackett, lost in Ohio.
BTW, how is it that Hackett is considered a "war hero". Is that in as much as all of our soldiers are heroes? I share that sentiment, but I would be surprised if this was not the first time it was embraced by the Boston Globe.
That might be even better than Spiro Agnew's description of the Donks as "the nattering nabobs of negativism".
My high school French teacher showed us that one in class (what, you didn't know "The Graduate" is a French movie???) Anyway, going to school in the 60s and 70s, I think every teacher, every year showed us two movies: "Island of the Blue Dolphins", and "The Red Balloon". Those two movies shaped a generation of Boomers. I don't even know what we were supposed to learn from "Island of the Blue Dolphins," but I can still pretty much replay it in my head, decades later.

Joan Venocchi is actually pretty clear-headed. I seem to recall she offered Kerry good advice and constructive criticism during the campaign. Luckily (for us), he ignored it!
Yup, I remember "The Red Balloon" but don't recall the "Island of the Blue Dolphins". Obviously my education is deficient which is why I probably ended up voting for Republicans. "The Red Balloon" does sum up a philosophy of just floating from one thing to another, not taking on any difficult challenges, not really committing to any direction because "...the answer is Blowin' in the Wind." Well balloons either pop like Dean or deflate slowly leaving shriveled up and wrinkled windbags like Kerry and Kennedy.
The first thing the Democrats need to do is admit they were taken over by the extreme left.
The second thing they need to do is openly purge themselves of that influence.
The third thing they need to so is denounce all these anti American organizations that keep funding them.
The fourth thing they need to do is become truly pro choice (I choose life).
The fifth thing they need to do is get some original ideas.
The sixth thing they need to do is stop saying NO.
And on and on and on.
Some of the music is good. :)

It was a movie (and a book) about a Native American (I don't like calling them "Indians," as the name was already taken) woman who was found on a Pacific Island living all by herself. This part really happened, but the rest of it--the details of her life on the island with her brother, how her tribe disappeared, etc., is fiction invented for dramatic effect, as the actual woman never learned to say more than a few words in English and had forgotten her native language after living so long by herself. It was a good movie (and book), but the lessons we were supposed to learn from it elude me to this day.
