When Sen. Ted Kennedy was merely just another Democrat bloating on Capitol Hill on behalf of liberal causes, it was perhaps excusable to ignore his deplorable past. But now that he's become a leading Republican attack dog, positioning himself as Washington's leading arbiter of truth and integrity, the days for such indulgence are now over. It's time for the GOP to stand up and remind America why this chief spokesman had to abandon his own presidential bid in 1980 - time to say the words Mary Jo Kopechne out loud. As is often the case, Republicans have deluded themselves into thinking that most Americans already know the story of how this "Conscience of the Democratic Party" left Miss Kopechne behind to die in the waters underneath the Edgartown Bridge in July 1969, after a night of drinking and partying with the young blonde campaign worker. But most Americans under 40 have never heard that story, or details of how Kennedy swam to safety, then tried to get his cousin Joe Garghan to say he was behind the wheel. Those young voters don't know how Miss Kopechne, trapped inside Kennedy's Oldsmobile, gasped for air until she finally died, while the Democrats' leading Iraq war critic rushed back to his compound to formulate the best alibi he could think of. Neither does Generation X know how Kennedy was thrown out of Harvard on his ear 15 years earlier -- for paying a fellow student to take his Spanish final. Or why the US Army denied him a commission because he cheated on tests. As they listen to the Democrats' "Liberal Lion" accuse President Bush of "telling lie after lie after lie" to get America to go to war in Iraq, young voters don't know about that notorious 1991 Easter weekend in Palm Beach, when Uncle Teddy rounded up his nephews for a night on the town, an evening that ended with one of them credibly accused of rape. It's time for Republicans to state unabashedly that they will no longer "go along with the gag" when it comes to Uncle Ted's rants about deception and moral turpitude inside the Bush White House. And if the Republicans don't, let's do it ourselves by passing this forgotten disgrace around the Internet to wake up memories of what a fraud and fake Teddy really is.

It is shocking talking to the "youths' of today, they really don't know anything about "the swimmer". I am always happy to clue them in.

Hello SD,
How did we get saddled with these dopes? The slum folks don't know it's a hoax. Kerry has billions, think he cares about Brockton or Lawrence? Ted is blitzed, keep in mind that in Palm Beach his nephews were sleeping when he woke them up to go to 9 or 11 bars, then the rape. Neither are for helping anyone but themselves.

A personal story...I'm from a "well to do" town in CT, my Mom is retired and well respected in town, my brother is a high ranking police dept. official. Last time I went home for a "visit" Mom had a babysitting gig for a cousin of Ted... I told my brother he better give Mom a can of mace and send a patrol car over to "check in" every half hour...they both scoffed at me but I was being serious...:)

He never paid his dues. His dues are past due for this manslaughter and the numerous other putrid offenses he's committed against this Country, his religion and common decency in general.

This was the email I sent to The Swimmer on the exact date of the anniversary. I sent it through his email form on his web page. I am so proud of it that, if pressed, I might give my real name:

Remember me, Teddy? I would have been 65 this year, had I lived. But you killed me deader than a doornail. And enjoyed scrambled eggs afterwards. Did you put Tabasco on them? Ketchup?
But of course, none of this means anything to you. Instead you have taken your evil Father's rum-running millions and used them to try to foist a Socialist Paradise that Castro or Karl Marx would be proud of.
When you are alone, do you consider the Uthurian irony of your family? All of you are discredited or deceased, including your drug-addict sex-fiend older brother.
There have been more Bush family members as President than Kennedys. And they continue to have a dynamic presesence in government and American affairs. The Kennedys are pretty much done. Honey Fitz failed. Miserably.
Your continued existence in government is a result of the complete inability of the people of Mass. to think original thought. White, racist, and Liberal, just the way you need them to be.
Think of me daily Teddy, honey. I hope you have a long life. And every night I will kiss you. And I hope every night you wake up with the smell of stagnant water and the taste of my water-soaked lips.
Love
Mary Jo

The Teddy Kennedy story would make a great TV mini-series. Do ya think there's a good ole Liberal media type out there that would like to produce it?

Sorry, unfortunately I don't see all the posts so duplication can occur .... I've seen doubles on the same page but never saw this letter before ....

I don't mind the occasional thread on this. I think it serves as a very good reminder of Teddy's charecter. He's a murderer who got away with it due to family money and name, plain and simple. I am just glad it was a big enough piece of baggage to keep him out of the White House.

you would be so curel as to bring this up NO, THE PERSON WASN'T BEING CRUEL.
it was long ago and he paid his dues IT WAS A LONG TIME AGO AND HE NEVER PAID HIS DUES!!!
lets talk about the kennedy he is today HE'S THE SAME TODAY THAT HE WAS THEN...DISGRACEFUL.
people should get over it NO...YOU GET OVER IT. WE NEVER WILL.
MARY JO DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE IN THIS MANNER. SHE COULD HAVE BEEN HELPED BUT WAS LEFT ALONE.
To: SkyDancer
Yes, but their child, also murdered on the same day, would have been, what, 35 today. If it had been a boy, he would have already taken his hereditary place in Congress and would have had a very modest career so far, and, if a girl, would have been a flaming drunk, making a fool/disgrace of herself in Kennedy fashion.

Isn't it great that we are free to discuss even old tragedies and failings of our system? One more reason to love America.
teddykennedy is a murderer. His failing to get help for MaryJo made him a murderer. He got off because of his father. This is a worthy issue to shout about.
I hope we bring it up every day. I would be thrilled if every senator addressed him as "the swimmer" every time they spoke to him or about him--especially in the Senate.
Apparently the only form of justice we're going to get over this is to make the boy uncomfortable. If that's all we have, that's what we should do.
You don't have to: We can do it ourselves. There seem to be plenty of us who feel this way. You don't have to.
