Masked thieves in Norway have stolen what they thought were three Edvard Munch paintings - but which turned out to be worthless copies.
Two unarmed men burst into Oslo's Hotel Continental, threatened staff and removed three pictures from the walls.
But the hotel had swapped the originals with duplicates after two real Munch works were stolen from the Munch Museum in the city almost a year ago.

Munch's The Scream is still missing after being stolen last year
Ahhh...one person's art (the scream) is another's portrait of Howie Dean. Too bad the later has gone missing...
(Edvard was a strange man)
Melancholy
LOL
oops should have been "hasn't"
Ping
Somebody is the proud owner of a few color photocopies.
I read the headline and figured someone had drank another glas of arctic water.
I remember a couple of posts here on FR that Munchs paintings aren't art because "art has to be beautiful". Like this pics of angels holding fallen soldiers or angels praying with deceased presidents that always get posted here.
I wonder if they use the same criteria when it comes to literature... only "happy" stories are worthy of reading.
IMO art doesn't have to be beautiful (though I think Munch's stuff is) - but at a bare minimum it does have to express whatever it expresses without having to be "interpreted" by a coterie of soi-disant intellectuals.
That flag-in-a-toilet garbage from the other week - that was Art. It expressed crassness, stupidity, treachery and poverty of intellect in one simple image, impossible to miss. I didn't like it or what it expressed - but it was what it was.
Munch's stuff is art, no doubt...but it's been used to portray Howard Dean so often within FreeRepublic...that it has become the man's (Dean) protrait. IMHO.
OK.
It's art. So what?
It also is ugly and repulsive. Bad colors, bad style, "childish-looking" and doesn't appear to require any talent (if you can reproduce a copy that can be mistaken for the original, the original isn't very complex!) to make, and can be beat by any number of middle-school band students.
But, what does it imply that the Norwegians have been displaying FAKE pictures for years, but nobody was "good enough" to notice?
I'd rather paint the walls with white.
I remember the thread & I was one of those who said I did not like Munch's work. I know I didn't say it wasn't art, though I may have left that impression.
I love this story. Crime does not pay!! I wish they got shot in the neck.
Art is all about who is lucky to get their name out to the people. Picasso wasnt that great either. Its just stupid.
Sue me...LOL!
