Ed Klein: Sid Blumenthal Targeted Hillary Book

Longtime Hillary Clinton attack dog Sidney Blumenthal "led the charge" in the campaign to suppress the bestselling biography "The Truth About Hillary," author Ed Klein charged on Tuesday.

"I've been totally 'blackouted' by the mainstream broadcast media, ABC, CBS and NBC," Klein said on a national radio show yesterday. "They all scheduled me on their shows and then, when Mrs. Clinton and her attack dogs got wind of it, they called up these TV networks and, in essence, threatened them that if they had me on, she would become less available to them."

Asked if he "knew for sure that Hillary's people were involved," Klein told Sean Hannity, "I absolutely do. And I know who's been leading the charge - Sidney Blumenthal."

Blumenthal has been for the most part invisible in the media battle over Klein's book, except for a lone comment to the New York Observer where he described "Truth" as a "wretched little piece of sewage."

But during Hillary's years as first lady, the former Vanity Fair writer gained a well-known reputation as a ferocious defender of his boss - who was no stranger to hardball tactics.

"Ex-journalist Sidney Blumenthal knew how to find a media outlet for virtually any assault," wrote the Washington Post's Susan Schmidt and Time magazine's Michael Weisskopf in their Clinton impeachment chronicle, "Truth at Any Cost."

"I can get that story placed," Blumenthal would tell White House colleagues, according to Schmidt and Weisskopf.

Whether Blumenthal was involved or not, there's certainly strong evidence that the media assault against Mr. Klein has been something more than coincidence.

Noting that he served as editor for the New York Times Magazine for twelve years, Klein described the Old Gray Lady as "apoplectic that one of their own, as they see it, has written a critical book about Hillary and they have run nine separate derogatory stories about me and my book.

"This could only happen if this decision to really smear my book is coming from the very top," he noted.
