The US Senate has passed legislation that would create a museum in the US capital honoring the achievements of American women.
The National Women's History Museum Act, which passed unanimously on Friday, would establish a museum "to research and present the historic contributions that women have made to all aspects of human endeavor."
The legislation also aims to "explore and present in a fair and balanced way the contributions that women have made to the nation in their various roles in family and society," according to the text of the legislation.
The House of Representatives now must approve similar legislation for the act to become law.
Officials anticipate the museum would attract more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
"Such a museum would also showcase the many important social, economic, cultural, and political contributions that women have made to our country," said Republican Senator Susan Collins, a key backer of the legislation, in a statement on Monday.
The women's museum is to be located in a vacant federal building a short walk from the National Mall, home to some of Washington's most visited cultural landmarks, along with museums honoring the cultures of Native Americans, Asians, and Africans.
Then, I realize...I'm not thinking like a lawyer writing a creative legal brief...I mean...like a judge "interpreting" the Constitution
1. A museum honoring women will inspire feelings of gender pride among some women
2. Women that are proud are likely to feel empowered
3. Empowered women are more likely to pursue careers than women that are not as empowered
4. Women that pursue careers may work for a company that buys products and supplies from out-of-state
5. The exact composition of out-of-state products and supplies that a particular company buys is (at least in part) a product of the gender breakdown of the company's employees
6. Therefore...in creating a museum honoring the achievement of women, Congress is clearly "regulating commerce among the several states"
This is ridiculous. OBVIOUSLY women have played a vital part in building America, and spending tax money on a PC museum to smooth feathers of the Feminazis is absurd. We have gone mad. I suppose there will be a big, ugly statue of Hillary somewhere in there. BARF.
"The National Women's History Museum Act, which passed unanimously on Friday..."
It is in the RAT's nature to steal wealth and sqaunder it. The problem here is that the Republicans just aren't getting it. No doubt some smartmouth will gloss over this crap with a fine list of sober reasons for doing this in the interests of the nation, but the fact remains that the Republicans just aren't getting it.
Peter Principle in Action Award.......
They are past their level of comptenence.
Why can't they just mind their business, leave this museum alone and let free enterprise "approve" it?
has this been through the House yet.
We already have a private museum dedicated to women's role in the arts in Washington, D.C.
Here's the link: http://www.nmwa.org/
If they really want a more comprehensive history of American women, why not set up a permanent display in the American History Museum or give a grant to this museum to expand? This is just more senseless pandering.
I'm tired of watching them fill the National Mall to the brink with unnecessary museums -- as if there won't be anything worthy of commemoration in the future.
There must not be any actual issues for the Senate to deal with, apparently.
Okay, now: will a certain minority demand 50% of the space (plus additional space for slavery reparations) or will all races get their commensurate amount?
<pun>
Also, where will the "kennedy/waitress/dodd" display be erected?
</pun>
I didn't read anything about the silicon wing...
How are they going to get 1.5 million visitors? Now without the silicon wing. There has to be SOMETHING to ballance the Helen Thomas Wing.
Man, we need a Benny Hill Museum. In Vegas. With animatronic Hills Angels. And a live show. with girls. Now THAT will get visitors!
So, let's see. 50% of us honor the other 50%. Now that's a real honor. I suggest we have a memorial for men too, then I'll go see both. But until then, no thanks!!!
Why does the government have to do this? Reads like something the Dems would put up just so the President can veto, and then they can say, "See, he is anti woman"
Well, fine with me.
But I want a similar museum honoring American men. Just men.
Otherwise, our tax dollars are going to promote sexism.
"...big, ugly statue of Hillary..."
AND all of the other NAG HAGs:
Journalism: Helen Thomas; Molly Ivins; Maureen Dowd, et al.
Entertainment: Jane Fonda; Susan Sarandon; Barbra Streisand, et al.
Politics: Barbara Boxer; Nancy Polosi; Maxine Waters; Sheila Jackson Lee, et al.
-- NO THANKS!
This is nuts. They already have a museum in DC, near NY Avenue.
This "women's museum" will no doubt quickly devolve into a "feminist museum".
Won't we also need similar museums to honor the contributions of lesbians, womyn, the transgendered, those with misaligned gender, left handed lesbians, repressed women, depressed women and oppressed women just to be fair?
Any woman who has to use the word "empowered" is NOT empowered.
We drive men crazy, and we give birth. If that's not power, I don't know what is.
Okay, we're going to have a museum honoring the achievements of women. Are we in the planning stages of a museum that will honor the achievements of men? A museum honoring somebody because of a gender difference has to be the most ridiculous idea of the past two hundred years.
But if this is indeed the trend we should plan a museum to honor the achievements of left-handed Welsh immigrants. And of course we will have to have a museum honoring the achievements of all Germans who wear a size 10 shoe. We must not forget the contributions of everyone in the country who wears glasses. In a few years every person in the country could have their own individual museum.
I insist that we have a museum honoring engineers of combined Dutch and Indonesion heritage who immigrated to the US after WW2! After all, without the contribution of my dad, I wouldn't be here to post on Free Republic, and American civilization would collapse.
