Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto
Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

Reporter on ground says aircraft came off the runway, into a gully and trees, 1/3 of the aircraft went up in fireball, according to reporter on the ground.
Crap.
No, I go to the websites where the airline employees are, you get better info.
Flames still visible, with mixed gray, white and black smoke. Fire trucks on scene dumping large amounts of what appears to be foam or water.
I made the same observation to my husband. You would think you'd see people straggling out toward the highway.
What is a "343". Is that AirBus?
The Air France web site shows a Paris to Toronto flight arriving at 3:35. The plane - a 343
There was a severe thunderstorm warning out. Winds were gusting up to 61 km/h (38 mph) at the time, and possibly much stronger for a brief period.

It may be that the plane landed in a wooded area making it difficult for the ARFF vehicles to get close to the plane

"343"is an Airbus 340-300. A large, four engined wide-body jet. Relatively new.

Eerily, today is the 20th anniversary of the Dallas thunderstorm/microburst crash.
20 years ago today, on August 2, 1985, a Delta Air Lines Lockheed L1011-385-1 crashed while attempting to land at Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, Texas in a thunderstorm. 134 of the 163 passengers and crew aboard were killed.
