Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto

Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

""If it's a European airline and over 200 people, it isn't a 737 - more likely an A330.""

Isnt it amazing how stupid the media is.....makes one wonder what else they get fouled up and wrong

It makes me feel better about surviving such a crash.

Any crash that you can walk away from is a "good" one.

I usually sit in an exit row, and I always tell my husband that if the crash is survivable, I will be a survivor. Even if I have to step on/shove others out of my way!

It is amazing that one would purchase property without knowing what there or expect what's there to go away.

We lived on Balboa Island and knew full well when we went there that JWA took off right over Newport Beach every day probably 12 hours a day 7 days a week. They did have hours where they were not allowed to go IIRC. 7am was first take off in the am.

The fight between Newport Beach and Mission Viejo over moving that airport was interesting. People who had bought and lived in NB for years knowing full well that airport was there wanted to put it in someone elses backyard!

Wife and I have cemetary plots on the landing approach to the Pitsburgh Airport. Hope I never get hit by a plane there.

I'm guessing the severe thunderstorms in the vicinity had something to do wtih that...

This is a Liberal government we are discussing here.....they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. ;-)

worth repeating :

"People give flight attendants a hard time, but they are in those planes to save lives in times like this; not to serve drinks (but they do that too). I bet they did their jobs well this time. I hope everyone thinks about this the next time they look down on an FA."

Air France still flies Boeings. I just flew one to New York last month.

If there's very heavy rain, you get the opposite problem -- the rain scatters and absorbs the radar microwave signal so badly that there is very little penetration into, and back out of, the storm.

Interestingly, the TS wind shear is due to a strong, cold downdraft from the storm clouds above. When it hits the ground it spreads out in all directions. As the plane approaches 'ground zero', there is a strong head wind, causing increased lift -- until the plane passes ground zero, when it becomes a tail wind, causing the plane to sink dramatically, into the ground if the plane is on late final.

Oh YES!! I used to work in a building right along the runway of El Toro. When the Blue Angels came to town we got a free show for two days while they practiced.

That was so amazing, what a show. No work got done during those times of course. lol

Boeings don't fall out of the air like that.

On 9/8/94 a US Air 737 in Pittsburgh just fell out of the air on final approach killing all on board. The crash was blamed on an uncommanded rudder movement, and all 737's had to be modified to (partially) avoid the problem.

Airbus doesn't have a monopoly on design flaws.
