Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto

Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

I used to do crash recovery and investigation in the Air Force - does that count for anything??

Just got home, catching up.

This is a miracle!!

To go off the end of the runway, break apart (according to first reports) and catch on fire and all survived. Wow

And you knew you were on a "good" ZOT thread (of course, this was before the ZOT) when you saw a whole heap of blue.

I like flying on the A330, very comfy plane, I also like the 747-400, and the 717.

Best opportunity I had was a flight on the 747-SP, from Capetown to Johannesburg to Frankfurt.

I'll never get a chance to fly one again, only about 40 left, most owned by governments.

"Yes it does, particularly with people scrambling out of the plane and running every which way, some perhaps in ambulances, others in buses, the plane still in flames, etc."

Yeah, exactly. For the record, I must demonstrate my optimism. At the same time, reality dictates that 290+ passengers all surviving not only the landing itself but also post-landing would be nothing short of a miracle. Sure hope the latter is true.

I think the presence of technical problems in this case WAS the indication of lightning. Thus, the system did (perversely) work. LOL

If it's wind shear without rain, there are no water drops to bounce the radar signal back off, therefore no detection.

I would hope the crew was last off, and they would know definitively if anyone was left on board.

(Unlike the pilot of the Challenger who (rumor has it), after crashing into a building, abandoned his injured copilot and passengers.)

You mean before 2001 this place was anarchy?! What fun.

In those days, the flame wars would go on, and on, and ON.

It was kinda interesting, if the individuals had at least
a good vocabulary and some intelligence.

You said:
"First A340 crash IIRC, its a good plane, I've been on lots of them, including AF's.

Skidded off of 25L into a ravine."

Nope....

Umm, not sure where you get your info from, but you're wrong here.

There is no 25L at Pearson. You posted wrong info here, since you claim to know so much.

You know for someone that jumps on so many here, maybe you should learn to do a little research yourself.

Just a Thought.

As a Pilot, I'd say that counts for alot!!!!A miracle that all Souls on board survived and appear to be fine.

14 minor injuries is absurdly low. I've seen low-speed bus accidents with more injuries.

Suspect a few cases of 'whiplash' may still be reported - LOL!
BTW, is it OK to now raise the possibility that the Air France plane simply surrendered upon touchdown?
