CNN's weeklong "Eye on China" paid by China?
Duowei News (in Chinese) ^

CNN had a week-long program running from May 14 through May 22, 2005:
Eye on China
However, a Chinese media expert recently disclosed that this news serie was paid by Chinese government as a PR campaign to improve its image.
The last paragraph of the Duowei story reads:
The lack of worldwide recognizable brands among Chinese media makes it necessary to seek help from other big names of other countries occasionally. According to Yu Guoming (chief of Media Institute, People's University of China), the Eye on China week-long serie on CNN was organized by China's public relations agency. "It's a money-consuming business, because we purchased their broadcasting time at commercial rate. It's different than news in operation", Yu said.

Did CNN make it clear to its audiance that they were airing commercials or a paid program, not a regular news serie? I doubt.

I've been all around the World. CNN plays to the local audience. Anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to travel abroad would be shocked by how they portray America offshore.
It's like watching Peter Jenning's just after the planes hit the towers. Simply aweful. (Why isn't the president heading back to Washington?", "That is very strange?", "Why would he do that?" followed a few days later with his attempt to quote Todd Beamer "Let Us Roll")

MSM has long been bought and paid for by the Democrats. Now the Communists are getting in on the act. I'm not sure I see the difference.

Yeah, but even to the jaded I think there's a big difference between just being a biased ideologue and being a prostitute. If CNN took money from the PRC...That'll be a new low, even for CNN.

If you want any CNN program it is so obvious that it is full of pre-paid fluff on par with Abrollers and other crap being peddled on TV. Another example is how every morning with Paula Zahn they seem to have a little pop culture piece profiling someone or something, and at the end of the 5-10 minute segment there is always the "....and now that she's pulled herself out of the depression of the last 4 years she's back and ready with a new due on shelves in July....". Its the same old thing. Larry King does it all the time too - all his "guests" just happen to be able to sell something. Before the shows end either the caption or the anchor or host always has to mention about someone's book, such as the CIA Analyst that was on Larry King today that happened to have a new book out too, and they are always leftits critical of US policy. If it took the China series for this become apparent, you've had your eyes or have become stupidified by CNN for at least the last 5 years. I really can't remember when they started all this smut, but its been a long, long time.

Let's give CNN and non-CNN Peter Jennings some due :)
We all know that Peter is biased, for better or worse - but I heard that 911 made him finally decide to be naturalized as an American (he was and is Canadian). So I don't doubt his patriotism, and also would like to thank him for his service to this country.
About CNN. CNN is banned in China (yes, you can watch it in hotels, but that's because you are not Chinese; locals are banned from receiving it). And I don't think their coverage of China amounts to communist propaganda.
That said, I'm still disturbed by the astonishing discovery that Chinese could have paid commercial rates to have CNN tailor a program, serving Chinese' needs, airing to millions of American homes, as *news*??? What the !@#$ is that news? Is that legal? Is it scandal? Are they criminals?
I can't believe my eyes. I just checked the source, and it looked credible: Duowei News was simply copying a China magazine story, and the magazine is sponsored by State Council. The author is Xu Ying, a staff writer. She (he?) was quoting a renowned scholar in China. What they did not know is the practice is unethical by American standard. or am I too stupid and naive?

Being a stupid moron is a service to the country? What is it Peter Jennings has done that you are so thankful for?

I live in Shanghai, I'm watching CNN on standard cable in my apartment (not a hotel) now. Cable is not illegal, you just have to be able to afford it.
Peter Jennings can kiss my ass.
CNN Asia over plays everything that appearance of going wrong for America in the war on Terror, America is always put in a bad light, way more so than the US version. I get both. The US version comes in on my illegal satellite hook up out of the Phillipines. Now satellite dishes are exclusively forbidden for all but the wealthiest Chinese, but a blind eye is turned for westerners because of all the technology we are transferring to them.
BTW: Google taylored there seach engine for China as well. Look into that one.

CNN International is ostensibly pro-China. That's where the CCP has put their money in, probably.
