Music Teacher Must Register As Sex Offender
CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- A former elementary school teacher convicted on 20 counts of encouraging child sex abuse learned his sentence Monday.
Gregg Ritchie (pictured) was sentenced to two years probation. He will also register as a sex offender and pay a $12,000 fine.
Ritchie taught music at Oak Grove Elementary School in the North Clackamas School District.
He was arrested in September after an investigation uncovered child pornography on his computer. He maintained that the images were there by accident.
What grade did this ELEMNTARY school pervert teach and for HOW LONG?
Does he have tenure? Is this the only way to eliminate tenure?
TWO YEARS PROBATION? AND A FINE?
THAT'S ALL?
"Accident."
Yeah. Same defense of Sandy Burgler. I wonder who this perv voted for last year.
Why isn't the MSM REALLY raising hell about this like the did when it was the priests doing this? They went after the Vatican. I want to see them going after the NEA and the union thugs that run that joint. Let's get with the program NYT!!!
The fine was really all they wanted out of him. Revenue, doncha know ... The two years probation was just so the district attorney and judge could feel like justice was served.
The real question is how many children has he sexually abused because, IIRC, the pedophiles don't stop at pictures.
Good point.
(On a side note, if it were MY Sons who were this perv's victims, I'd be happily spending the next 20 years in a cell picking the perv's rotting flesh out of my teeth and fingernails)
That makes two of us.
Not sure. It was K-6 elementary. And it is the school my kids would have attended as kids, had they not gone to Catholic school.
I did a Zaba Search on the guy and it says he lives in West Linn, just down the road.
Once a teacher has taught for three years, then in order for the school system to decline to renew his or her contract, the supervisor (principal) must have documented evidence of the failure of the teacher to do the job for which he or she was hired, evidence of insubordination, or of a violation of law or policy.
There are steps that a principal may take in order to fire such a teacher, and the teacher has the right to appeal. The appeal does not automatically allow the teacher to keep his or her job. It merely ensures a fair hearing in which the principal must give just cause for the dismissal. If the principal provides proper evidence, such as unsatisfactory performance evaluations, documented evidence of insubordination, or violation of law or policy, then the teacher will be dismissed. It is not a lifetime guarantee of employment regardless of the circumstances surrounding the teacher's job performance.
If a teacher is found to have facilitated or participated in the sexual abuse of a student or other child, tenure does not protect him or her from prosecution or dismissal. You are attempting to use this example as a reason that "tenure" should be abolished. The two are not related.

*************PREVIOUS RELEASE***************************** Music Teacher Arrested For Encouraging Child Sex Abuse
On September 28, 2004 about 12:18 p.m., Mr. Gregg Ritchie was arrested at the offices of Oregon Education Association located at 12300 SE Mallard Way, Clackamas for 10 counts of Encouraging Child Sex Abuse in the First Degree. Mr. Ritchie is currently being held at the Clackamas County Jail with his bail set at $250,000.
On September 21, 2004 the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office received a complaint from the North Clackamas School District. The complaint was that a parent was concerned about inappropriate conversations his minor child was having in an Internet chat room with Mr. Ritchie.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office child abuse team began an investigation into the matter and subsequently took possession of Mr. Ritchie's personal computers.
A forensic analysis of Mr. Ritchie's computers revealed several pornographic photographs depicting minor children engaging in sexual activities.
At this point, there is no evidence to suggest that Mr. Ritchie committed any crimes on school property or that he used any school equipment.
The North Clackamas School District has been instrumental with this investigation and has assisted the Sheriff's Office when requested.
Mr. Ritchie has been a music teacher at the Oak Grove Elementary School since 2000; he worked prior for the Oregon City School District.
Detective Jeff Green, the investigating detective, will be available for an interview at the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office at 4:00 p.m. Detective Green will provide an educational piece on child Internet safety as well as provide some details surrounding this case.
There is nothing further to release at this time. A booking photo of Mr. Ritchie is attached to this release.

"It is not a lifetime guarantee of employment regardless of the circumstances surrounding the teacher's job performance."
I agree but it seems some districts just don't want all the hassle of removing a tenured teacher unless they'd done something horrendous.
FYI it might be a 3 year trial period where you are, it's 5 years where I live.
In case you didn't know, tenure is a job for life.
Have you EVER seen the union deny TENURE?
Of course not!
I was hoping with this kind of betrayal, he'd be banned from teaching with or without tenure.
I went to the school. Yes I am 15 and he taught K-6 and he was my music teacher, we always thought there was something wrong with him, like gay or something but never this, he was a great teacher and I look down on him for this. No I am not a victom.
"No I am not a victom."
