I just hope Roberts is not very very very very conservative....
To: kennedy
Could you imagine her saying 'very, very, very, liberal' referring to a Pelosi, Kerri, etc.?

NPR's Nina Totenberg, who has tagged Supreme Court nominee John Roberts as "very conservative," "very, very conservative" and "very, very, very conservative," as well as "a really conservative guy," "a hardline conservative" and "a clear conservative," to say nothing of being "a conservative Catholic," on Inside Washington over the weekend relayed that after she "spent five hours reviewing all of his documents from when he worked in the Justice Department," she "was actually quite surprised at how, how very, very conservative he was." Apparently, she didn't listen to herself. That Nina .... she certainly is eloquent and has an unsurpassed command of the English language!

As long as he is very, very, very conservative...I am happy.

So he's a three, maybe a two on the Very Totenberg scale.
I would rather have somebody who rated 12-14 VTs. (Each VT represents a ten-fold increase over the previous number on the scale.)

In her world three "verys" puts him somewhere in the moderate camp as far as most real conservatives are concerned.
If she would add one more "very" I would consider him possibly a true conservative by our standards!

Personally, I don't care how "conservative" he is (seeing as how that's a "very, very, very" malleable term). I just want to know if he'll uphold the Constitution, that's all.

NPR reporter Nina Totenberg I actually owe this woman a great deal of gratitude. She and her little friend Anita went after Thomas just about the time I was really questioning my college-induced liberal philosophies. When I saw the way they treated Clarence Thomas, I came over to the dark side in a major way and have never left.
So, may I just say, thank you very much Nina. You changed my life for the better.
To: kennedy
It sounds like they are trying to make Shillary only "very" conservative...

Actually, I am quite worried. I remember when Nancy Pelosie described herself as a very conservative Catholic. Since Nina only describes Robersts as a conservative Catholic, I am terrified. (sarcasm)
If Nina T. did not say very, very, very conservative I would be alarmed. I am starting to feel better and better about Dubya's pick.
To: kennedy
I think Nina is very, very, very, liberal... but she works at NPR so she must be mainstream... right?

Do we have any calibration reference? On the Totenberg scale would Stevens and Ginsburg be moderate, Souter conservative, O'Conner very conservative and Scalia very, very, very, very, very, very, very conservative?

Nina; most of us care much more about whether he will follow the Constitution.
This is much more important than your definition of "conservative"
