Pompei, 30, a narcotics agent with the Glendora Police Department, was killed June 9, 1995, during a shootout with robbers at a Vons supermarket in his home city of San Dimas. He had interrupted the robbery while off duty and managed to wound two robbers.

Never good to run into that kind of thing off duty. No commo, no back up, etc.

Sherif's copter still orbiting, but at higher altitude and without any dramatic cut - mostly show at the moment.

Air 7 appears to be the only stationary news copter - everyone else has pretty much left.

Sunflower still closed at Arrow Hwy, Sunflower exit closed both directions, Lone Hill is open, but with police activity.

All that is left up in the sky is the Sheriff's copter which is still orbiting around. Sunflower now open, and I'm heading home since I can get there now.

The suspect is in custody, they did the field identification. Capture was done by the Pomona Swat and Glendora Swat, working in two teams. The man was caught not wearing the white shirt that witnesses spotted him in earlier, but instead bare chested. He was hiding in a bush less than 90 feet from Pomona's armored vehicle which transported the swat teams into the wooded area.

He was spotted on infrared from the LA County Sheriff's copter and remained still for more than 3 hours evading police.

I saw no obvious signs of struggle or injury on the perp, though he gave some indications of having experienced the dubious pleasures of pepper spray. Police audio indicated that he was, of course, experienced with the system and under parole.

The TV trucks were set up about 300 feet to the south of the command post, I ended up 15 feet to the east. Just lucky I guess.

Did they catch the bad guy?

I was out to dinner over eating fine Chinese food and wondered where this was at now.

Good report. I figured they'd get him. On parole? With attempted murder of a leo, this guy will be doing some hard years in jail.

Any report on the condition of the leo?

Wow, if they didn't have infra red there would have been no capture...

The guys from KCAL seemed to think he was doing ok, the folks from Glendora PD would only answer with a 'Can't really talk about that' but without grimaces or other indications of worry, so my guess is he'll come out fine.

Don't know for sure, probably won't find out until tomorrow.

The Eyewitness folks were more than a bit ticked - they missed the field ID (they were too busy chatting, drinking their coffee and griping.) Hopefully they picked up some video from City News for their broadcast. Probably will find out after this California Adventure story.

Yeah, if it wasn't for the helicopter having that ability, they probably wouldn't have found him. Both teams had gone past him twice, the vehicle had driven within feet of his hiding place. The helicopter pilot wasn't even sure it was a person since it hadn't moved..

Hey! There's the stringer's video that he took next to me. Mark "Hammer" Vasquez.

Gotta also credit the great mutual aid assistance from the various departments in the area. K9 units from Monterey Park, helicopter support from Pasadena (they covered while the Sheriff's switched copters and refueled), Arcadia's Swat, Pomona's Swat, California Highway Patrol, and of course the LA County Sheriff Deputies. We've got a pretty small department in this town, and the help was very much appreciated.

And wow, that mobile command center that Pomona has is pretty wild - you've never seen a more strange sight than a class A mobile home going code 3 down a busy street weaving in and out of traffic.

Not a problem.. Didn't really want to go sit at home with all the doors locked listening to the helicopter spinning overhead, figured sitting over at the command post would be more comfortable and ensure that I'd know what happened.
