Aide to Wisconsin Governor Delivers Hypodermic Needles to Opponent of Stem Cell Research

By Todd Richmond Associated Press Writer
Published: Jul 27, 2005 MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The top aide to Wisconsin's governor had hundreds of used hypodermic needles delivered to the Assembly speaker's office on behalf of a woman protesting the lawmaker's stance on stem cell research.

Republican Speaker John Gard's staff immediately called police, fearing the needles, delivered July 19, might be contaminated.

Dan Leistikow, a spokesman for Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, said the needles were sheathed and posed no threat. He defended the delivery as a way to send Gard an important message from an aggrieved mother.

According to police reports, Liz Kastner said she asked Doyle earlier in July to deliver the needles - which she collected - to gain publicity.

Kastner told police her daughter suffers from diabetes. She was angry at Gard because the Assembly passed a bill banning therapeutic cloning, which creates human embryos for stem cell research.

Kastner, a Democrat, said the ban would devastate stem cell research and rob her daughter of a possible cure.

Kastner said her 12-year-old daughter, Isabel, uses four needles a day to inject insulin. She collected a year's worth of used needles - 1,460 of them.

Gard's staff said they feared the needles might have contained diseases. "It was unpleasant and unnecessary," said Gard policy analyst Jeff Schoenfeldt.

Doyle knew his staff had received the bag, Leistikow said, but didn't order its delivery to Gard. Chief-of-staff Susan Goodwin made that decision, he said.

"In light of everything this woman and her daughter had been through, we didn't think it was the right thing to turn her down," Leistikow said.

Investigators warned Kastner not to try to distribute needles again.

Bad idea, unsafe, and unprofessional sending used medical needles to someone to make a point. I would be livid I got something like that.

I'd suggest warning Susan Goodwin as well.

No matter what my child was inflicted with I would not advocate the death of a baby to save her/his life. Adult stem cell research holds more promise and has actually had several benefits recently.

The libs just don't want to admit it, they would rather kill babies. It gives them another excuse for legalized abortion.

Just another little observation: If embryos are not babies, how can they be called human embryos?

Jail for Jim Doyle (WEAC-WI) and his staff. The use of medical waste to make a "point" is unconscionable -- ESPECIALLY syringes. Were the needles at least in a proper Sharps container?

Ms. Kastner: Go out and RAISE YOUR OWN MONEY for stem cell research. DO NOT use my tax money for it. (This governor has no basic arithmetic skills, but that's another thread.)

Use umbilical stem cells for research -- more proven results there, and no one has to die for it. You can have a fundraiser to sponsor this.

Did you fall for John al-Q'erry's (D-France) antics during the Presidential debates? You know, where he was talking about Michael J. Fox, and started to have "spasms" on stage?

THERE IS NO PROOF, Ms. Kastner, that embryonic stem cells do anyone any good, anyway. As noted above, adult stem cells have shown some results.

In closing, Ms. Kastner, A.G. Peg Lautenschlager (DUI-WI) should be prosecuting you all as terrorists.

Thanks for the ping.

More ridiculous antics from the left. Nothing surprises me in this town, anymore.

Rest assured, I'll be working day and night to get rid of this governor and his thugs. Wisconsin politics needs a really big kick in the teeth, as far as I'm concerned. They're not prosecuting Chvala and his cronies fast enough for me. 20+ felony counts against him, alone! Good golly!

Hi, Diana! Can you get Charlie Sykes's radio program where you are (or can you listen on the internet)? He's really going to town on this.

And, of course, many trolls are calling in to protest the show -- the trolls are saying that Mr. Sykes is stigmatizing their diabetic children by saying they have AIDS. He said no such thing! He only said that this was hazmat, which it is. And that the needles were delivered in a PAPER BAG, not a Sharps container! Sheesh.

I hate Illinois Nazis Wisconsin liberals....

I know the answer but I thought I would say it anyways: I wonder if any of the MSM will pickup on this in the next couple of days?

Thanks! I grew up on WTMJ in Milwaukee, but I can't get it in now, as I'm 10 miles south of Madison now.

We have a great ConservaBabe on WIBA AM 1310 from 2-6pm each day. I listen to Vicky McKenna as often as I can. She comes on after Rush, so I can get really fired up for seven straight hours some days, LOL! :)
