Stoughton (WI) police are investigating the theft and mutilation of a rainbow flag from the yard of a lesbian couple, but investigators are not calling the incident a hate crime.
The nylon flag was taken either late Friday or early Saturday from outside the home of Margaret Funk and Lou Meade.
"The pole was broken, the flag was shredded and it looked like they attempted to set it on fire," Funk said.
The flag symbolizes tolerance and diversity.
Lt. Pat Conlin of the Stoughton Police Department said there is no evidence that the vandalism was a hate crime. He noted that an American flag was stolen in the same area two days later.
Funk said when she discovered the flag was missing she handed out a memo to her neighbors asking them to keep an eye out for it. One of those neighbors eventually found the mutilated flag.
Conlin said a beer can was found near the flag.
Funk said the neighbors are not accustomed to problems.
"They're shocked," she said.
Funk and Meade have lived in Stoughton for about a year, and this is the first time they've encountered hostility.
"This is a wonderful neighborhood," she said. "We love living in Stoughton. It's very quiet."
Nice catch.
Please don't make me point out how much of a moron that makes you appear to be since it's only protected when it's your own property.

OK, then. You have a simple theft. Above and beyond that, to the level of "hate crime" is where this will most certainly be taken. I'd call YOU a moron, but I really think that that is poor form, so I won't.
Nice catch? Try you and he need a course in remedial reading. It says the memo was handed out after this happened. But please, don't let elementary education get in the way of your hysteria.
"It says the memo was handed out after this happened."
Should I take this to mean that you're in favor of compulsory participation in neighborhood directorates, issued in order to protect public displays of free speech that some may find offensive? Legal precedent is a bit murky there, bubba.
What did the article say? God, can you people read even on a first grade level? It said it was not being looked upon as a hate crime.
I'd call YOU a moron
Which, of course, would seriously crush me. ROTFL
Your right of course, but I wouldn't take this thread to be a serious advocacy of destruction of private property, just a bit of venting.
No, you should take it as it was intended. That far too many of you are too stupid to read and comprehend.
Unfortunately, this crap gets read and widely. It makes conservatives look like the whack jobs the left tries to portray us as.
The rainbow flag stands for input/output/user selectable function. Too bad they didn't just burn an American flag. Now it's a HATE CRIME!
"Which, of course, would seriously crush me. ROTFL"
You do come across as having just a wee bit of an inferiority complex, and just a tad too tightly wrapped, to boot.
When you sober up, re-read the post. It was the planting of the beer can which betrayed the "crime" as self inflicted.
Had it been an American flag that was destroyed, no one would have said a thing.
"That far too many of you are too stupid to read and comprehend."
"Stupidity" is a label that you fling with too much relish, I should think. Childhood issues?
Hehheh, he called you "Bubba".
You're assuming a theft took place. This has fraud written all over it. Liberals are famous for posing phony crimes in a bid for sympathy.
Wow, now I'm really going to cry. You idiot. The only one of the two of us that looks bad is you. You aren't a conservative. You're a freak who advocates destroying others private property because you don't agree with their lifestyle. That doesn't make you conservative or tough, it makes you a silly, mindless little man.
Your post is unnecessarily rude and obnoxious, but it is also correct. I stand corrected.
May I suggest that you learn some manners?
Bubba? Nah. Bubbalicious? Maybe. Hahahaha
