WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old woman at a mall will be prosecuted as a hate crime because the suspect said he wanted to kill a white person, authorities said Tuesday. Phillip Grant (search), 43, who is black, was indicted Tuesday on charges of murder, murder as a hate crime, and possession of a weapon. The June 29 slaying of Concetta Russo-Carriero (search) took place in the parking garage of the Galleria Mall in White Plains. If convicted of murder as a hate crime, the minimum sentence would be 20 years to life instead of 15 years to life, prosecutors said. A call to Grant's lawyer was not immediately returned. In a 45-minute tape played at a court hearing earlier this month, Grant told police that he was fighting a race war and killed the woman because she was white. "All I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die," he said.

But if he had just wanted to rape a white woman, he wouldn't have been charged with a hate crime.

Weird stuff. Not sure if I support this.

You can't charge people for what they were thinking at the time of the crime. A crime is a crime.

Hate crime - why can't they just call it murder? Is larceny a 'greed crime'?

"All I knew was she had blond hair and blue eyes and she had to die"

Was that the first one he'd seen? You go without killing white folks for 43 years, you figure he could have waited it out. </s>

He should also be charged with cowardice.

He REALLY wanted to kill a white MAN, but didn't have the balls, so he picked a 56y/o woman.

In other words, if (unlike OJ) he was convicted, he'll be out in 5-7 years.

I'm sure the victim will feel much better about this. Why isn't he facing the death penalty for murder? Oh, that's right in New York he's entitled to at least one murder before it becomes a serious crime.

This is not much different from a terrorist act. The muslim imams and black race pimps preach hatred for the white european race, Christian and Jewish religion, and American values. They get the young hotheads all fired up and shouldn't act suprised when violence happens.

Lets see, if convicted of murder one, he probably will get life. Add hate one to that and he will get another life term, to be served CONCURENTLY.
With time off for good behavior and if he can get the right groups to adopt his cause, he can probably be out and on the streets in 5-6 years.

Indeed. Hate crimes are an idiot idea thought up by the idiot left. It's an avenue to express their inner supressed anger and rage.

This is simple, and this is how our legal system works. This stands accused of killing someone in cold blood, premeditated. Charge him with murder one. If convicted, life in prison, no parole.

But of course, actually enforcing tough sentences for heinous crimes is politically incorrect these days, especially when it's an african-american.

I agree completely. I have never liked hate crime laws. People shouldn't be punished for their thoughts, and besides, would it be a lesser crime if the perp didn't hate white people but just thought killing people was really neat?

The only good argument I've heard for prosecuting this as a hate crime is that as long as the laws exist, they should be applied across the board. This is the fair thing, and also makes more people aware of how stupid hate crime laws are.

The fact that the minimum sentence goes from 15 to 20 years is NOT a good reason. If you can't get at least 20 years for an admitted murderer with this guys priors, you shouldn't be a prosecutor (or a Senate candidate, for that matter.)

Or, perhaps, even a cashier at the drug store.

I'm not from NY, and I don't want to move there.

I have often been of the opinion that the character of elected officials people complain about are a reflection of the character of many people (not all) that voted for those candidates. Kind of a sobering thought, considering that this country elected Clinton twice.
