Move over XM and Sirius. A new technology allows Internet radio to be heard through a car stereo system.
"iRadio," designed by Motorola, uses a specially designed cell phone as an intermediary between the car radio and a personal computer.
Subscribers will choose six Internet radio channels and download them from a computer into the phone, the Chicago Tribune reports.
When iRadio is on, six buttons on the car radio will correspond to the six Internet channels loaded into the phone.
It will also be accessible for listening on phones equipped to handle the new technology.
The service is now being tested in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., and is expected to cost from $5 to $7 a month.
This is what I've been wanting (best solution would be for my internet radio favorites to be added to Sirrus).
Alternate scheme is for me to just buffer off the archives of the programs I like, and burn them to CD. While it isn't live, I can hear the complete broadcast.
well if the connection isn't any better than cell phone connections, XM and Sirius have absolutely NOTHING to worry about.
using a cell phone tend amount to communicating with smoke signals. LOL
Another nail in the coffin on old radio..
I've got cable in my car, but I can't go very far.
ooooh, six whole channels. wow!
Oh, well, hindsight and all.
Hmmmm, SIRI is still under 7 ... of course, if one of their satellites goes out, they're toast, but what are the odds of that.
TS
Siri has a spare sat. xm does not .
I bought siri at $3 and sold at 7 . its a see saw stock.
buy now and wait for stearn hype in 06.
Looks like I'm ahead of the technology curve! I've been listening to my Mp3's by patching my IPOD through my car stereo for over a year. I just recently started downloading IMAO-Podcast to listen to in the car. Turns out that a podcast has to be pretty damned good for me to be listening to it on my car. On the other hand, I drive in places where there is almost NO radio reception. When you get sick of CD's it's awesome to listen to whatever's on your Mp3 player. You can get one of these stereos with the 3.7mm jack at any Circuit City or Bestbuy.
Can you imagine how geeky one would have to be to be listening to a podcast on a cellphone? heh. "Oh-no Moto"
How does iPod fit in?
The issue here, of course, is how does one get a fast enough internet connection into the car in order to be able to listen to an internet radio station, let alone jump back in forth between six stations.
I don't think Sirius and XM have much to worry about.
Once you get pass license agreements it probably will be a future must have toy. People will buy it.
Totally agree. This is speciality branding at its worst.
I think it may have a potential market for GPS navigation system. It would be a useful device for real-time road conditions alternate routes around accidents...etc.
I already scream daily at cell phone technology, I'm now going to count on it for radio? What's this, 6 stations?
We're looking at XM .....anyone know if we can pipe it from our Pick-Up to our TRAILER when we're out in the far forests of this great nation.....and still get a lot of stations? Anyone think Sirius or XM is better?
Seems, once the "internet radio is in the car" we'll want the INTERNET so we can be ONLINE with Free Republic!!! Who cares about the RADIO!
We have Sirius and if you like Jimmy Buffett they have a new Margaritaville channel that plays a lot of that type of music and much more. It is great!
