KANSAS CITY, Mo. — About a dozen newspapers have objected to use of toilet humor in Tuesday's and Wednesday's "Doonesbury" comic strip, and some either pulled or edited the strip.
Kansas City-based Universal Press Syndicate, which distributes the Garry Trudeau strip to about 1,400 newspapers, said it had received some complaints from editors about a reference to presidential aide Karl Rove.
In the strip, a caricature of President Bush refers to Rove as "turd blossom."
It has been widely reported that "Turd Blossom" is the president's actual nickname for Rove.
Lee Salem, editor at Universal Press, said the complaints, from 10 to 12 newspapers, weren't unexpected, given the concerns many editors have about language in the funny papers. But as opposed to other times when editors have objected to Doonesbury content, the syndicate did not send out replacement strips.
"Given the coverage of Karl Rove, we thought it was appropriate, especially given the history of the strip," Salem said.
Among those with concerns was the Providence (R.I.) Journal. There, editors simply removed the offensive word from the strip's final panel.
"I didn't think [taking out the word] hurt it," Executive Editor Joel Rawson said. "I would prefer to run the strip and if we can edit it, that's fine."

Note to newspaper editors: Don't bother editing Trudeau's tedious, tendentious strip. Just put it on the editorial pages where it belongs.

I'm thinking about an article I read confirming the Turd Blossum name for Rove. Seems the article talked about the actual flower (weed?) that grows when "motivated" by bovine excretment.

:) My favorite Bloom County was Berke Breathed's depiction of other cartoonists. He drew Cathy Guisewhite ("Cathy") and I forget who else. The last cell was labeled "Gary and the twins". "Gary" was standing in front of a huge hammer and sickle, holding the twins, while each was wearing a wooly communist party hat from the now defunct Soviet Union.
It never has been, I can't see why papers even run it. I've always thought it was just plain infantile and the stupidest thing I've ever tried to read.

Now now. Jane Pauley has earned the right to be criticized for the inaninity of her views without reference to her emotional condition.
I remember what she had said about meeting Gary. They both ate "Stouffers" frozen dinners. Now there's a real common bond! But isn't Gary anti capitalist? Shouldn't they be growing their own maize and making their own tofutti?
If anything it sounds like something Cheney would say.
