NORTON SHORES, Mich. (AP) After spending a decade getting sacked in the NFL, former Detroit Lions quarterback Eric Hipple apparently learned a little something about bringing down an opponent.
He tackled and helped disarm a knife-wielding man shortly after the man slightly injured a third person at a party in Norton Shores, just south of Muskegon, police said Tuesday.
Hipple, 47, whose 10-year pro career spanned the 1980s, was not hurt.
Lt. Jon Gale said Douglas Davies, 24, of the North Muskegon area, arrived at the party Saturday evening looking for his girlfriend and started acting disorderly. Gale said Davies was asked several times to leave but refused.
Around 9:45 p.m., in the front yard of the home where the party was being held, Davies pulled a 3 1/2-inch, folding, serrated knife on Scott Sanborn, 43, of Norton Shores, Gale said.
Davies slashed at Sanborn, leaving a superficial scrape on his stomach about 3 inches long, Gale said.
Hipple, 47, who lives in Fenton, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit, then ran headfirst at Davies, who had the knife in his right hand, Gale said. Hipple grabbed Davies' right arm and tackled him to the ground.
Michael G. Walsh, a Muskegon attorney representing Davies, said Tuesday his client was tackled to the ground in an unprovoked attack and suffered a broken foot while trying to defend himself.
Minutes earlier, Davies was injured when a dog at the home bit him on the hand, Walsh said.
Hipple told police he had seen Davies waving around the knife and refusing to leave.
By the time the police arrived, several people were holding Davies on the ground and the knife had been taken away from him, Gale said.
Davies was arraigned Monday in 60th District on a felony charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. He was freed after posting a $2,000 bond and a preliminary examination was set for Aug. 8.
you KNOW that guy is tough if he played for the Lions in the 80's and survived :)
NFL/Lions Ping!
The Darrylect Rogers years!!!
ping
What the heck was Hipple doing there anyway...and why didn't he show that kind of guts when we was playing in Detroit...if I recall he was always getting sacked himself!!
Go Lions!!
Hipple needs to school Joey big time.
LOL
I remember my uncles complaining about it well :)
LOL
heh...
don't worry if Joey fails. You guys will get Garcia the Metrosexual as your QB. That IS a good thing.
If Garcia gets the reins early enough with all those weapons, you may keep Green Bay out of the playoffs....
Detroit could go 10-6 this year if they let Garcia be the opening day QB. It didnt work in Cleveland for him because Butch Davis is a horrible coach and that was a horrible Team.
I kind of like Garcia, he helped me win my fantasy league a few years back. I think he might be over the hill now.
Playing the victim card.
Excuse me, but keeping in line with the new guidelines concerning the defunct (War on Terrorism) terminology, I think we should refer to this incident as...

(Former Lions QB Hipple sacks knife-wielding attacker, police say) What an unfortunate headline... sniff sniff, sob sob...
Beaten up by a quarterback........
That gets a lot of laughs from a ex-safety and former d-back coach. :)
nah the guy didn't play half of the year last year. Sure he was injured, but he doesn't have the normal wear and tear on him that a normal 34 yr old QB would have....
yeah...
Orlovsky is at least a year away. He only played one year in the Big East and it was an extremely watered down Big East at that. He has the tools but he needs some time.
Garcia isn't your future, but he could be a decent present.
Ty Law - what an ass. Less than a year ago he could have had a four year contract for 24 mil or so to finish his career with the Pats. He called it an insult.
Now he's going to end up with a one year deal for close to or at the veteran minimum. I can't believe nobody has picked him up yet. He'll have something to offer.
