Son of Spiritual Mentor of Osama Bin Laden Calls Attacks on Civilians Criminal
Published: Jul 26, 2005 CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - The son of Osama bin Laden's spiritual mentor said the recent string of terror attacks that have swept Egypt, Britain and other countries are "a crime."
Abdullah Azzam, a Palestinian who led Islamic militants in Afghanistan and was killed there by a roadside bomb in 1989, is considered the mentor of bin Laden, but the younger Azzam said his father would fight against groups that target civilians and use his name.
"All those using my father's name are only using his name to market for their operations," Hudhaifa Abdullah Azzam said in an interview with the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya network broadcast Tuesday.
A group called the Abdullah Azzam Brigades was one of three claiming responsibility the attacks in Sharm el-Sheik on Saturday that killed 88 people. It also claimed responsibility for the Oct. 7 bombings at the tourist resorts of Taba and Ras Shitan, which killed 34.
The same group claimed responsibility for a Cairo bombing and shooting on a tourist bus in late April.
"If Abdullah Azzam was alive, he would have been the first fighter against that ideology," Hudhaifa Abdullah Azzam said.
"I won't use the term terrorism, because it is an American and European terminology, but we can call it criminality, the bloodshed of innocents, aggression on those whom God has ordered their blood be preserved," he added.
Abdullah Azzam studied Islamic theology in Egypt before traveling to Saudi Arabia where he lectured in Islamic law. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, he was paid by Saudi Arabia and other Islamic states to establish camps for Muslim militants to fight Russian forces.
The younger Azzam said bin Laden changed his rhetoric to the extreme and began targeting civilians under the influence of his Egyptian-born deputy Ayman al-Zawahri. Hudhaifa Abdullah Azzam said al-Zawahri did not like his father.

This is an interesting follow up to the story you posted earlier:
Zarqawi's ex-mentor slams Iraq attacks [Zarqawi betrayed by his mentor]
Now *that's* what I'm talking about!
Just remember under their ideology there's no such thing as a civilian non-believer.
It just sounds like more words to me.
They are important words. The more we hear like this the better.
LOL
FRAUD
True religious people don't try to score points when addressing TERRORIST crimes.
More than a billion muslims in the world and nobody knows nuthin but there's always the condemnation.
I don't look at his words as some truth, just dissention amongst my enemies.
The Zarqawi mentor is more believable in my book. I think he realizes that Zarqawi is out of control and may bring serious wrath on to islam as a whole.
There are two kinds of Muslims.
Islamofascists who want to use bombs abd bullets to convert or kill us.
"Moderate" Muslims who prefer to seize the mecahnism of governmnet and use our own laws and courts against us to convert us.
In some odd way I seen 9-11 as a mistake by them and a gift to us. They revealed their plan too soon. Another 10-15 years and they would have infiltrated the military, government, police, FBI, etc. They blew it. We will never let that happen now.
