A truck tire hits a flagged wire, a roadside bomb explodes, a handsome private with shredded leg screams in agony. In the bloody chaos of the moment, his soldier buddies panic. One pukes.
Stop the cameras! Sir!
"People don't act like that when an i.e.d. (improvised explosive device) goes off. They make us look like idiots. We're not idiots!" said a first lieutenant previewing "Over There," the new TV series from Steven Bochco ("NYPD Blue," "Hill Street Blues") that debuts tomorrow night on FX cable network. It's set in Iraq, hyped as "true to life" by producers and hailed by critics as "unflinching" and "gut-wrenching."
"Bogus" was the preferred adjective among the eight soldiers -- most of them Iraq vets -- viewing the series pilot last week at Camp Murray, headquarters of the Washington State National Guard in Tacoma.

That's true. Actually, I'd bet that Potter as well as possibly Radar would have been Republicans today.
Just wait until "Commander in Chief" hits the TV this fall.........about a woman President. They're going to start brainwashing us on a possible Hitlery in '08. PUKE. PUKE. PUKE.
Yeah...but Geena Davis is a HELL of a lot better looking than Her Heinous...
So far it seems like nit picking.
Geeze, did anyone really care that Rambo couldn't do half the stuff he did or that Red Dawn had some major obvious gaffes in it and that John Wayne's bravado is what the military mocks in training?
Even the 'documentary' Gunner Palace bore little resemblance to what troops in other areas experienced. So what it real for one my not be real for another.
Besides, isn't this supposed to be entertainment first and foremost?
And I'm eager to watch it. I'll make my judgements later.
I never really noticed that. I saw a lot about pro-America and pro-people, and glorified the work of the guy just doing his job. They often showed what people here are asking about this show: the soldiers who do good by the locals. Potter was held up as the gold standard for a commander, and he was representative of much that is good in the Army. There was a LOT of criticism of the Army, but in Korea the Army was pretty FUBAR after the post-WWII drawdown.
It did slide quite a bit after Alda took over writing and directing, but a few gems popped up here and there.
Same here. From what I've read, it's mostly a character-driven drama with the war as a backdrop.
Of course, as usual, Freepers are boycotting a show they've never seen.
...tells me all I need to know about Mr. Bochco's perspective.
I've got two different stories:
A Bradley is the lead vehicle in an armored convoy, moving towards Baghdad. The Bradley is hit by an RPG, and immediately catches fire. A 21 year old sergeant repeatedly enters the burning vehicle, removing the wounded. He spends several days in a hospital for smoke inhalation. He is awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
An up-armored Humvee heads down a divided road in Fallujah. The driver, a barely 20 year old Spec 4, notices a suspicious car in the middle of the road. He takes quick action, and jumps across the median, as the IED in the car is command detonated, missing the Humvee. However, they have just entered the kill zone of an ambush, and begin taking small arms fire. The driver and two passengers are hit. The driver shows remarkable composure, and drives out of the ambush, saving the lives of his three passengers. The driver is medivac'd to Germany, where he undergoes a series of reconstructive surgeries on his hand. He is awarded (so far) a Purple Heart.
THAT is what the F^%$ING CIVILIAN COWARDS like Bochco and the rest of the Hollywood America haters DON'T WANT YOU TO SEE because it does not fit with their traitorous objectives.
With the way I've head the 'Nam Vets talk she might be safer in wHollywreird...
It'll be interesting to see if that permeates this show. And if so, who'll still buy advertising time on it.
FWIW, I'd rather watch Oliver North's War Stories on FNC.
People Magazine, August 1, 2005 gave it a glowing review .
Except for one thing -
" Despite some early hiccups-
most notably the failure to humanize the Iraqis,
who do little more than fire guns and scream, " Infidels ! "....
Let me guess, Barbara Bosson will be playing a super libbie director of an NGO working in Iraq, or a MASH-style Army doctor or nurse.
May God bless your daughter for her sacrificial service!
In the end we will prevail: the Muslims didn't know what they were getting into when the picked a fight with the English-speaking world (though they might have had a clue if they had looked back at the history of the past 200 years).
no, i think he is right to anyone who has seen war will tell you war is hell. war is the worst thing man created. i personally hate war. That doesn't mean that it is wrong. Its like taking out the garbage, it stinks but you have to do it. I dont know anyone who likes garbage. .
I'll watch it tonight, Cecily:
I still hold Steven Bochco in high esteem from his "Hill Street Blues" days. IMO, the best "Cop Show" ever!
I know that Bochco had a few duds ("Cop Rock", "Bay City Blues", "Beverly Hill Buntz") but I'll keep an open mind.
Having grown up with the original B&W "Combat", "The Gallant Men", "12 O'Clock High" and "The Rat Patrol" the bar is pretty high. We'll see how it pans out.
Jack.
In a preview of "Over There" at Camp Murray in
Tacoma, 1st Lt. Eva Sovelenko reacts to a scene as
Sgt. John Figueroa looks on. These soldiers say
"Over There" is bogus.
If you guys are looking for "A Band Of Brothers" set in Iraq, I believe you'll be disapponted.
I may be disappointed, too. I don't know, having not seen the show. If it's a t*rd in a punchbowl, I'll let you know tomorrow.
One of the things that made "Band Of Brothers" so great was that survivors of Easy Company actually assisted Hanks and Speilberg with the selection of actors who resembled those soldiers in their youth. They also assisted on script and set design for the Ardennes and other locations that were shot on a monstrous set in the UK.
I doubt you'll get that much time spent on depth in development with "Over There". Personally, I'll be happy if it's close to CBS's "Tour Of Duty", which had its roots firmly set in the old "Combat!" TV series of the 1960s.
Jack.
"Over There" isn't bad!
Big Technical "cheapness" in the opening minutes. With loading gear onto USAF trailers. And the Ear-plugless flight inside what may have been a C-130.
The Act II and III scenes were very remeniscent of "Combat!" and "Tour Of Duty" with a serviceable "Sgt. Scream" filling in for Sgt. Saunders or Terenace Knox's Sgt "Z".
Plus a Mosque filling in for the German Machine Gun Nest/Bunker/Observation Post from "Combat!". The troops SHOULD have been blinded and screaming when their NVG googles were hit by spotlights halfway to their objective.
I'd a feeling that "Mrs. B" managed to duck the Iraqi's AK rounds before the night fire fight started. And figure that Pvt. "Bo" Rider would lose a leg as soon as me mentioned that he was a HS Quarterback.
"Dim" could easily fill in for "Combat!"'s "Cage". "Angel" for "Kirby"
Altogether, not a "T*rd in a Punchbowl", "Over There" could be a Heck Of A Lot Worse!
Jack.
