NAGASAKI (Kyodo) The Japan Map Center has found 29 negatives of aerial photographs of Nagasaki taken by the U.S. military a day after it dropped an atomic bomb on the city in 1945, in a discovery expected to help reveal the immediate effects of the attack.
The pictures, taken by a U.S. reconnaissance plane flying over the devastated city Aug. 10, 1945, were found at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration.
They are believed to be the first aerial photos of Nagasaki taken a day after the bombing to be made public. The oldest such photos, taken Aug. 12, are currently kept by the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, the map company said.
Last December, Japan Map Center officials found documents showing the flight route of the reconnaissance plane and black-and-white negatives at a branch of the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration in Maryland, according to Kunio Nonomura, head of the center.
The officials brought back digitized copies of the negatives to Japan.
The map firm will publish some of the photos in an extra edition of its monthly magazine issued Aug. 1.
My son has a degree in Japanese Studies and spent his last college year at a University in that country. He being quite the lib all I ever had to do to get him on an entertaining rant is to say the little B******S deserved it. Funny though, he has now spent a year in S. Korea (AF)and is actually getting a more realistic view of Japan from them.
A good read is the book WARS END written by the pilot of the photography plane over Hiroshima and the bomb plane in Nagasaki.
He said that by bombing these two places he figured it saved hundreds of thousands of U.S. soldiers lives it would have cost to invade the Japaneese Islands.
I feel no temorse if you look at the end result.
While in Japan I found that they still hate us for the bombings and refuse to accept responsibility for starting the war or any responsibility for bombing Hawaii or the numerous war crimes committed by the Japaneese armies.
If we are bombed here with any nukes we should use our nukes to take out all the centers of support for terrorism against the U.S. such as Mecca, Medina, Syria, tehran and all of Yeman.
Remorse? I don't think so.
Another good read is the bio of Paul Tibbets..."The Man who Won the War"..it came out about 2-3 years ago...lots of interviews with other members of his crew as well..
I would imagine it would just turn a stone building into a burnt out shell, if left standing at all.
Depends on the direction of the blast forces; if downward, many stone walls could withstand it. There was a building (Hiroshima Castle?) left mostly standing very close to Ground Zero.
Yeah, I knew that someone would misconstrue my comments.
What Truman did by authorizing the use of those weapons took a boatload of courage and it did save tens of thousands of GIs lives.
And I was in Japan and didn't get the same feeling from the Japanese. Of course, you must realize that it was only in the mid- to late 80s that Japan finally admitted their role in the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and allowed those historical events to bve taught in the schools. Prior to that, the Japanese government was more willing to acknowledge the existence of Godzilla than any part they played in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
I'm not saying that we shouldn't respond aggressively if a nuke or dirty bomb is exploded by terrorists in the US. What I'm saying is that we need to be circumspect about casually suggesting that the US should nuke this place or that. The citizens in either of those places may have the capability to strike back . . . . or first. we might want to be a little circumspect about whom we think should be nuked - we could end up on the receiving end of someone else's ability to actually carry out such an attack.
If anyone finds a link to high resolution versions of these images, before I do, I would be grateful.
No, it would not.
The third critical factor is height above target for the explosion. The differences are dramatic.
Fortunately, the odds of a terrorist detonation at optimal height are essentially zero.
Air burst vs. surface burst...
BUMP!
You are correct that we should not advertise in advance what may or may not happen.
This is a purely speculative notion but say Israel or russia sets up a deal where it looks to be say Iran. We jump ugly and Iran for once in it's existance is innocent and we blow them to their maker.
nOt good.
Historical BUMP!
