Is IANSA calling for a global ban on guns? Does IANSA think that nobody should own guns?
Our members around the world are working to reduce gun ownership in their communities because that is what will make people safer. The situation varies from country to country; at a minimum, we believe that private gun ownership should be subject to basic standards including gun licensing an registration, with a ban on civilian owner ship of military weapons.
In many countries if you want to drive a car you need a driver's license, and if you want to buy a car, the car needs to be registered with the police. When it comes to cars most governments realise that they are lethal devices that need to be carefully regulated to save lives. At least the same standards should apply to guns.
Why does JINSA think that private ownership of guns should be controlled?
A gun in the home does not make anyone safer, and especially not women. Most times, when people try to use a gun in self-defence, the situation gets worse- it is not easy to use a gun when you're scared, and your attacker is more likely to used deadly force if his life is threatened. So there is actually an increased chance of being murdered if you have a gun in the home.

I started shopping for another revolver yesterday. I'm in the market for either a 4 inch model 63 or a 696, whichever shows up first. It seems I generally buy one every time I see some gun-grabbing bull like this. Oh, got a new set of grips from S&W for my model 29 today! Checkered presentation grips with the diamond and medallion, very traditional. I'm in the market for either a 4 inch model 63 or a 696, whichever shows up first.
Do these people have 3rd graders writing their material? The above sentence isn't too far removed from "guns are bad and we don't think people should own bad things."
"A gun in the home does not make anyone safer, and especially not women."
Perhaps you ladies could respond to that one...
I have a gun in my home, and I feel much safer than I did prior to its purchase!
And, every time I come home from the practice range...shooting better than the time before...I know I am prepared to protect my family under even the most extreme conditions!!
By this logic, there is actually an increased chance of being raped if you are wearing clothes.
This is why we have stress practice...timed and under stressful conditions...where you practice using your weapon to protect yourself and others around you.
It's all about conditioning...train your body to act in a certain way and when your brain shuts down from adrenalin...your body's training will take over!!
Their implication that the US has unregulated firearms laws is deceitful (implying we're the same as Brasil).
I'd rather take my chances owning a gun if we should ever experience a criminal bring in at our house. I suppose that would be where the rubber meets the road--but I'd rather die over a fight for my gun than pleading with some goon to spare my life.
The other side of the coin, of course, is that citizens are supposed to be the the "militia" that keeps their eyes on our government. We must be prepared to act if the day ever comes that our government becomes tyrannical.
What a crock. When they disarm all the terrorists, drug dealers, criminals, etc, then they can come talk to me. The answer would still be no, but they are never going to get guns away for those people, so they don't need to bother me. They're NEVER going to get my guns, unless it's one bullet at a time.
I feel much safer with my guns. I sleep well at night because I have a gun on the nightstand, 2 shotguns behind the door, and others at strategic places around my house. IF a man breaks into my house with rape on his mind, I'll shoot him and as he lays there dying, I'll shoot him again. LOL I'm such a meanie. Don't mess with women who have guns. ;o)
They need to read some of your self defense articles.
2nd amendment mama and I worked on a research presentation together for an assignment of mine. There are sites out there with some pretty interesting information. Just a few here:
GOA citing Kleck: In 1979, out of 32,000 attempted rapes, 32% were successfully committed. However, only 3% were successful when woman was armed with gun or knife. He also states (and I have to find out what year this is) that women use guns as many as 561 times a day, or 200,000 a year, against sexual assault. I believe it doesn't mean the gun was fired, but may have been a deterrent or a way of holding the perp until the police arrived - I have to look up this information for clarity.
Justice Department Study:
57% of felons agreed that criminals are more worried about armed victim than police.
60% of felons agreed criminals will avoid someone they know is armed with a gun.
74% of felons agreed burglars fear getting shot by home owners so they wait until no one is home.
In Orlando, Florida, 1966-1967:
When a number of women were being raped in Orlando, the media was promoting hard a safety course that taught Orlando women how to use guns in self-defense. A lot of women took the course. The stats later were very interesting. Orlandos rate of rape dropped 88% in 1967 while the rest of Floridas rate of rape stayed constant.
I have to find the source and timeframe for this one: Across the nation, 17 million American women own firearms, 44 percent American women own or have access to a firearm.
Not only are women protecting themselves with guns, but the more a criminal may think a woman will have and use one, the less likely that criminal will attack her. Guns are a deterrent.
This crowd who says a woman isn't safer with a gun would be hard pressed to convince a woman I met recently. She's taking steps to defend herself with a gun from someone who is due to be released from jail (or prison) in a couple of months. Unfortunately, Wisconsin doesn't allow CCW yet so her risks of being attacked away from her home are higher than they would be if she could carry.
And, personally, I know first hand that you cannot count on the police to be there on time to protect you. By the grace of God, I would be six feet under if it wasn't for "chance." So I'm taking what steps I need to to be able to defend myself, and that means with something more than a little popgun. After a couple recent incidents in the neighborhood, one of my neighbors is also armed and ready to defend her family. If someone to stupid enough to force an attack, we aren't going down without a fight.
Americans are sick to death of others trying to tell us what's good for us and what's not. Doesn't matter if it's from the gubberment or some stupid organization like this. We can make up our own minds, thank you very much, and that includes what method we women use to defend ourselves with.
Gee, IF their numbers are accurate, what are the circumstances of these deaths? War? Genocide from some oppressive tribe? Self-defense? I wonder how many of those are criminals being shot down by their intended victims.
So much easier to just throw out numbers...
The United Nations wants our guns so they can steal our money and rape our shildren. Oil for Food, Congo, Sudan, the way they treat Israel, and the way they used to treat Arafat. I am at a loss to find one thing they have touched that has turned out well? Their track record is on par with the most corrupt and evil governments in the world.
You are so right! There is no way that I'm going to trust my safety and security to some government agency - especially coming on the heels of the recent supreme court decision that stated, yet again, the police have absolutely no obligation to protect me.
I guess, according to IANSA, I'm just supposed to hand over my guns. Well, they can come get them anytime they want....and since I'm sure they'll be unarmed (don't they hate guns??) I'll give them my ammo first.....LOL
To drag up that old line that I'm more apt to be killed with my own gun is getting beyond tiring! Maybe if the "little people" in Rawanda had arms they'd have been able to fight off a tyrant like Mugabe. Or, if all the women that have been raped by the UN peacekeepers had guns, they wouldn't have been raped. Or maybe if some of the Iraquis that had been taken from their homes and killed by Saddam Hussein had guns they would have been able to defend themselves....well you all get the picture! Like I'm going to trust anything that comes out of the scandal ridden UN....not in this lifetime thank you.
Perhaps you ladies could respond to that one...
This kind of crap just sends my into paroxysms of anger. Oh, yeah, I'd be so much safer without a gun if some thug breaks in with mayhem in mind. I'll just grab the phone and call 911, and wait for rescue. Mmm Hmm. That's an effective way of dealing with imminent attack, isn't it? Buy a gun, learn to use it. I'm not really interested in begging for my life and hoping for mercy from a criminal, and calling 911 just means that someone will show up sooner or later to draw a chalk line around your body and write up a report.
Speaking as a former State of Florida Probation & Parole Officer, I can verify and raise those stats. When I first came on the dept, my office was located in extreme south Dade County in a high crime area known as Goulds. I was nearly the only male in the office. So what did they do? To create my caseload, the bosses loaded the ex-ARMY guy with all the most dangerous felons reporting to the office. Although at that time, by law I was a state level LEO, it was dept policy not to arm us. But in my case, my bosses said that they'd authorize me a weapon of my choice. So I took my own .45 Government Model with a Milt Sparks Summer Special IWB. They accepted my tenure as Division Pistol Team XO in my army unit as proof of qualifying. They said if I had to blow one away, make sure it was a good shoot and they'd back me.
I got to know those goons very well and I eventually asked them similar questions with similar answers, except about 99% was the figure. Remember this was within a year of Florida's shall issue CCW permit taking effect.
ExSoldier: 2a and I like numbers, especially credible numbers. Especially recent credible numbers! With a source! Florida sure has some interesting numbers... :o)
Are those numbers for 1994 nation wide? I wish we had your information for the project we did - that it was all handguns and not including knives makes those numbers and percentages pretty amazing. I'll be looking for that one for future projects.
Yes. The study was done by the DOJ, but the source I got the info from was the NRA. They sent it to all their certified firearms instructors (me). I think it was on their 1994 Firearms Facts Card
I'm gone for a couple of days and miss out on this great thread! Thanks for the ping anyway!
