The Democratic Leadership Council, an organization of influential party moderates, on Monday named Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., to direct a new initiative to define a party agenda for the 2006 and 2008 elections.
The appointment solidified the identification of Clinton -- once considered a champion of the party's left -- with the centrist movement that helped propel her husband to the White House in 1992. It also continued her effort, which has accelerated in recent months, to present herself as a moderate on issues such as national security, immigration and abortion.
In her new role, Clinton immediately called for a truce between the DLC and liberal elements of the party, which have engaged in a war of words over the Democrats' direction since President Bush won re-election last year.
The DLC has been struggling to maintain the influence in the party it wielded when Bill Clinton held the White House.
Clinton said that she would reach out not only to centrists, but "progressive people from all perspectives" to prepare her blueprint, which is due in one year. But the remarks from Sirota show the challenge of devising a program that attracts broad support across the party.

OMG----will it never end. Half of this country is SO hungry to have a coronation, instead of an election, that they are gonna take this country down....
After watching her speech on C-span last night (from Aspen, co. on July 10th), she makes if VERY clear, that she is all about changing everything about the way the country is working right now, and to make us all (exact quote) "GLOBAL CITIZENS"....
and she said that we need to start right now, making sure our children are "global citizens"....socialism is marching and has just taken a very big first step...
Hillary a "moderate?" ROTFL!!!! Give me a break. And stop peeing on my leg and telling me it's raining.

Another 100,000 or so votes in Ohio and it would have been another story altogether, and Kerry was perhaps the wrose candidate they have fielded in a generation.
I never understand why the GOP never calls them out on their real agenda.
I think that we are in for the struggle of our lives in 08.

It is really scary. Why can't the GOP explain what she really means by all of this. I never understand that.

I would argue that 40% of the country is ready to coronate her. These include many of the same voters who would vote for Saddam Hussein over George W Bush if given the opportunity.
The key is whether the right stays united, or is divided-and-conquered (again) by the Clintons. Hillary has clearly identified several fault lines (open border globalists v. border security conservatives, neo-cons v. isolationists, etc) and is moving to exploit these divisions (using her bully pulpit to force her GOP to take a firm position on immigration, challenging Rumsfeld's downsizing of the conventional military). If we nominate the right candidate, we can defeat her, but the conservative movement could also break apart and hand her the keys to the White House.
With a credible third party conservative on the ballot, she can win with 43% of the vote, like her hubby in 1992.

I try, try, try to keep my Sunny Attitude, but I can't disagree with you on this one.
Now, I may be grossly uninformed as to how the DNC works, but isn't this Howard Dean's JOB? We never see anyone from the Republican ranks constantly stealing Ken Mehlman's thunder???
This is not going to happen. Moderate liberals will go along; but.. the radical left? Non.
I had something stunning happen to me today. My mom, 84 years old and a lifelong FDR Democrat, told me that she wouldn't vote for Hillary! because she was too conservative! Is Hil's plan backfiring?
