"The question is, how much privacy are they willing to give up for a chance at better health? "

How is the government monitoring you result in "better health", unless the government will also FORCE people to take their medication, get the "required exercise", force them to eat the "recommended foods", or ELSE, which could mean denial of medical care.

The article even states that the government would indeed intervene:

"By pinpointing problem patients, then intervening ever so slightly in their care, Frieden said the city can improve thousands of lives. "I don't think we can afford not to do anything," he said."

This is such an outrage of government intrusion into people's private lives, that if they let this go through our privacy is totally gone.

"Dr. Paul Simon of Los Angeles County's public health department, said other big cities could follow New York's lead. "

Government control over every aspect of our lives, "for our own good" is not "just around the corner", it's HERE.

People worry about "loss of privacy" when the government can check up on what people do in public, and there is not outcry, when the government quietly does things to REALLY intrude into our lives and CONTROL it.

Where is the outrage?

How good a job has NYC done at tracking the spread of AIDS?

Decades ago they used to anonymously inform people who may be infected with an STD that one or more partners had contracted something.

HIV/AIDS was always considered "different".

It continues to spread among homosexuals and it is NOT because of a lack of funding or advertising.

My father had diabetes, and lived in NYC too. He was nearly perfect in his compliance with medical advice and he still lost the lower part of one leg due to his disease. I really don't think the secondary effects of diabetes can be entirely blamed on poor health management by the sufferers.

I hate these nanny-state utopians with their joyless conviction that they can create a heaven in this fallen world in which we live.

Outrageous!
I see we are a step closer to HillaryCare.
Next will be toilets that collect your "product"
and analyze it for unsanctioned chemicals. Alarms
will go off if prohibited waste is detected.
Citizens will be promptly detained for their own
good and sent to "Eater's Education classes".
It's just a matter of time.

My cousin, who is an epidemiologist for the state of Massachusettes, came out to visit this weekend. She left behind some public health journals that she brought along to read while travelling. I was looking through some of them. Apparently, everyone who works in the public health sector is a flaming liberal!
P.S. John F. Kerry is giving a speech at the opening general session of the American Public Health Association's Annual Meeting & Exposition in New Orleans this November.

The so called privacy act, and the accompanying Hippa documents that get flashed before us when we interact with Doctors, clinics and nurses, does the exact opposite of protecting privacy. It actually permits gov't interventions like the one you mention in NY.

We can disagree as to whether or not their is a right to privacy in the constitution, but perhaps some will agree that it is outside the scope of the power of the US government (IE, not mentioned in the constitution) to do such things, without the permission of the individual.

The fact that I take Glucovance is none of their f****** business, and the first Marxist overseer that dares to intervene and impose themselves upon my home and individual sovereignty will need more than a few pills to cure what'll ail 'em.

This country is in the toilet, and Leftists have a death grip on the flush handle.

NYC, Boston, Washington D.C., are all going to start (or planning to) checking people at "random" on the subways/mass transit systems, now NY wants to start monitoring peoples' health (and legislators in California have mentioned similar ideas, although not as far-reaching). Some of the areas mentioned above have talking about going after snack foods, and they have all gone after smokers.

Funny how they all are made up of large numbers of liberals.
