Well, it happened friday (July 22nd)when my life came to a sudden stop with me walking on stage at the Atlanta Civic Center with the President of the United States. Just writing this it seems to have been a very sureal moment...I'm having difficulty remembering it all.
For some reason I was selected from the state of Georgia to represent seniors and discuss SS reform. It started two weeks ago with repeated phone calls from the WH asking me questions. Funny thing..the first call came in and when I saw it was "unknown caller" I just let the machine pick up. Imagine my shock when they said it was the WH liason office calling for me. Needless to say I thought it was a joke.
Being a 70 yr old senior way past her days of being on stage (in plays)I found it totally exciting...scary...total intimidating and all the other things one can think of.
But I can tell you that President Bush and his Mother were most gracious and I came away with even more appreciation of the tremendous job he has before him every day. His kindness toward a family who had lost a son in Iraq..his writing a special note for a friend of mine whose Mom is very ill are just two examples of what I found to be his most enduring qualities. We can spend hours debating policies butI believe he truly cares about people. I mentioned what our subdivision does for returning service men and he thanked me for taking the time to think of our military.
We will be going around the state talking to other seniors to enlist their help in getting start on SS reform. Will need some help with why people are so adamant against any changes.
I'm still walking on clouds and since this is my first post if I goofed please be kind and show me the way!
great story..any pictures??
If this post isn't worth a vanity I don't know what would be. Thanks for letting us in on your great day.
Congratulations!
You are one lucky lady.
Good for you.
The closest I ever got to him was 30 feet. It still was a thrill.
A great honor for you and for Free Republic. God bless President Bush.
Great to see that the prez is bringing the message to the south!!!
I don't have any pictures (yet) and if I did not sure how to post them but I believe a fellow freeper from Atlanta was there and I'll see what I can do about pictures.
It was a great day in Georgia!!! Not sure of the count but heard it was around 4,000 people in attendance (private-invite only)Personally I didn't look out into the audience for fear I'd faint!
The protesters were something else and not much of what they yelled can be repeated...what a motley group they were.
grannyheart2000, Good for you! Thanks for posting and you did just fine. Maybe some pics?
