Porn, pork and Pabst -- you're safe from them at Caribou Coffee. In an SEC filing last week for its initial stock offering, the Brooklyn Center-based coffeehouse chain noted that it operates its business according to the Islamic principles known as Shari'ah.
"A Shari'ah-compliant company is prohibited from engaging in derivative hedging transactions such as interest rate swaps or futures, forward options or other instruments designed to hedge against changes in interest rates or the price of commodities we purchase," Caribou said in its filing. "Also, a Shari'ah-compliant company is prohibited from dealing in the areas of alcohol, gambling, pornography, pork and pork-related products."
Atlanta-based Arcapita Inc. owns 84 percent of Caribou. Arcapita is the U.S. private-equity arm of Arcapita Bank B.S.C., a Bahrainian investment group

I have heard, and as I recall it was a serious article, stating Caribu is owned by Palestinians and Starbucks is owned by Jews.Break their hearts, remind them that Caribou's CEO, Michael Coles, is Jewish.

The chairman of their Shari'ah supervisory board is: Dr. Yusuf Abdullah Al-Qaradawi Chairman, Seerah & Sunnah Center, Qatar University; Professor, Faculty of Shari'ah, Qatar University. Just to clarify, I've been involved in deals that were structured to be Sharia-compliant. These Sharia supervisory boards have always been independent groups outside of the company in question.

Accordance with Sharia. Hmm. Do they boot out immodest women or couples displaying such affections as hand holding? How do they feel about their Jewish customers (if any)? Do they have a large infidel customer base? How are they and their unclean money handled? Oh, the money's ok? Sharia just doesn't mesh with our own laws. Non-muslims would do well to read up on sharia before supporting the business carte blanche or just walking to the nearest Starbucks. I hear there's one on every corner, how hard could it be?

The truckers do have attitude, like, `this our place'. Special section to eat, but guess they're on a tight schedule.

Caribou (and as of this past January, Church's Chicken, which they bought from AFC Foods, Inc) are both owned by Atlanta-based Crescent Captial. They claim not to be affiliated with "terrorist organizations," but I'm more than skeptical. My money isn't going to them if I can at all help it...
Just damn.

Interesting. I actually prefer Starbucks but would stop in at Caribou (especially in the MSP airport). Last week I ordered a box of coffee and shirt from
Contra Cafe . I haven't received it yet. I wonder if Ollie North has had a cup of Contra?

The ones here in Atlanta have female employees. I think they IV coffee into their employees, everyone is so perky there.

Oh yeah. Like I'll do busines with a " Shari'ah-compliant company " any time in my next several lifetimes!
Might as well hang an AK-47 and Rocket Launchers in the front window, LOL!

Another Jihadist business laundering site.
I wonder if they'll all have a huge warehouse in the back and a mosque upstairs...

Up-and-coming coffee retailer Caribou keeps compliant with Shari'ah law. Well, isn't that special.Good business move on their part, there are a lot of Muslims in Minneapolis.

I'm not putting anything in my mouth made by people who, any day, might decide to go jihadi and poison the coffee.
Is that powdered sugar, or rat poison?

I have a friend who manages a Starbucks in St. Paul. They have a lady schoolteacher as a customer who maintains a gift account for any military personnel who come in. They drink on her whenever they come in.

Stories like this always make me feel totally unimaginative.
I do remember once I walked into a restaurant and I knew that a very young marine was close behined me with what looked like his mother. I paid for two more and asked the cashier to please not say who paid.
To this day I get a warm fuzzy feeling from having thought to do that.

My friend told me recently that she served a woman soldier and told her it was on the woman. The soldier left and came back with tears in her eyes and asked my friend to thank the woman.
