Maybe, given the salient factors in this proposed split, instead of East and West California, the two new States should be named Greater and Lesser California. ;-)

I'd actually favor the larger state retaining the state name, all mottoes, the flag, and any other emblem now associated with the state. The smaller state would need to adopt a new name, and absorb the costs of decaling all vehicles, printing new letterhead, designing a flag, and whatever may be necessitated by the split.

I've received some light hearted input on naming the states nonetheless. Ultimately, the choice would be the citizens, not mine, and I prefer it that way. A couple weeks ago as I pondered a name for the small state, two names came to mind. The first was a parody of Communist Viet Nam and mainland China.

I thought about calling the small state the "Peoples Republic of California". It wasn't long after another more stunning thought came to mind, and it made me reflect and shudder. I thought about Sodom and Gomorrah. How sad to think this was the way I viewed these two regions that would form the small state, but it seems to be an image the majority of citizens in those areas embrace. How sad.

I expect a number of people will move from the smaller state if the initiative is successful. I pray God will help us all.
