Some Freeper will come along and translate it for us eventually.

Greta Wire

The shuttle (search) launch is Tuesday — or at least we hope and that is the current NASA (search) plan as I write this blog. I drafted my colleague Thom Bird who is at the launch to send me an e-mail. He wrote it on Monday and I am posting it today before the launch.

E-mail No. 1 — From Thom Bird, executive producer, FOX News specials and events:

We're back. The FOX News Shuttle team is back in place at Kennedy Space Center and looking forward to the launch of Discovery (search)... we hope. Ignition is scheduled for 10:39 a.m ET, Tuesday morning with four working low-fuel sensors or not. We all find that NASA's position to launch with some faulty parts has opened them to criticism, especially after the Columbia tragedy and the extensive review which followed.

We arrived on-scene this morning... back to the heat and the humidity and the haze. Our set is back in place with the huge yellow air conditioning ducts pumping cold air to the top of out three-story structure. Unlike last time, we actually can feel a slight breeze coming off the swamp. Looks like we lost a neighbor: MSNBC abandoned their set, which was built next to our trailers. Maybe the heat was too much for them? I hear they moved into the NBC building, one of a few permanent structures built here at KSC by the networks. CBS has one, ABC lost theirs in a storm... they're in trailers too. We're curious how our missing neighbors could move in with their mother ship network folks... seems like it might be a bit too cramped... unless, of course, the mother ship bailed.

It also seems there are other members of the media missing this go round. The place is not abuzz like it was 12 days ago. Maybe the interest is gone. Even the NASA astronauts, who were here in bunches, are missing. We've had to share our NASA-assigned astronaut, Cady Coleman, because the pickings are slim. Cady is great and our competitors know it. She was very good with Shepard Smith for the first attempt.

Shepard is not with us this time, he's manning the anchor desk back home. Jon Scott is here with us this time, fresh from a hot vacation in the Midwest. He spent some time on a houseboat with his family in record heat. So, he's fully prepared to sweat with us here in Florida. Thom Bird

On Wednesday, I am hoping to post a short video — about 2 to 3 minutes — which shows you what our guests see when they come to FOX. It takes you from outside the building, through the lobby, up several floors to the bureau entrance, the waiting area, newsroom and even my office. It does not get more "behind the scenes" than this.

The e-mails continue to pour in about Natalee Holloway (search). After Monday night's show I am growing a bit optimistic that we will get some answers in the near future as to what happened to her. I am a bit perplexed why this new witness is just appearing now and hope that he is not a crackpot. It seems to me that a responsible person would have stepped forward earlier.

More of your e-mails:

E-mail No. 2 — This viewer did not want to sign his/her name:

Greta, I just want to express my disgust of FOX News and your coverage of the Natalee Holloway, you single handedly want to convict the young man, Joran, and the brothers. Your bias coverage of this case is so disgusting it's pitiful. Why don't you investigate the Twitty family and find out who is bank rolling there expenses in Aruba? I bet if it was a black or Hispanic girl you wouldn't give it a thought to cover the story, but since its it blonde white American girl from Alabama, it's headline news every night. The girl is probably in Venezuela starting a new life away from her parents. I don't watch FOX News Channel anymore.

E-mail No. 3

Greta,

When will you reveal how much FOX is paying the Twitty family to be exclusive to FOX? Noel Courtis Brisbane, Australia

ANSWER: I am delighted to read your e-mail, Noel. It is plain to me that you only watch FOX — which delights me. If you watched other networks you would know your facts to be wrong (in fact, Monday night, right before our show, Beth Holloway Twitty and Jug Twitty were on with my former colleague Larry King.) So, keep these e-mails coming and just keep watching FOX. Thanks

E-mail No. 4

Greta,

Why haven't higher authorities stepped into this Aruban 58-day-old crisis? The president was willing to intervene in the Terri Schiavo case. Why can't he put pressure on Holland? Why can't "someone" direct the State Department to suspend all visas and visits until further notice? I will bet that will get their attention. The FBI should be permitted to take over the case. Are we witnessing a national cover-up? Is the Aruban government covering up the evidence?

Tom

E-mail No. 5

Dear Greta,

Thank you so much for your coverage on Natalee Holloway. I just want to say how impressed I am with her mother and the way she is handling things during interviews. Please do not drop this story the way that other news agencies have. This is such an important story and the family must find out the truth! Do you have a theory as to what happened to the teenager?

Sydney Hall

E-mail No. 6

Greta,

I will put up $100,000 to anyone who can lead authorities to the body of Ms. Holloway. Of course, I hope she is found alive, but it looks grim, so I am happy to inspire someone to come forward with information that leads to the recovery of her body. I am a faithful watcher of your show.

Best regards,

Henry Soric

E-mail No. 7

I am glad to see at least some dogs have been at work and feel you are doing a wonderful job. A quick point about search dogs that you may not realize — after watching you and the aunt on the evening of the 25th I will make you aware of this. A cadaver dog only does good after the body has begun to decompose and that scent becomes airborne or to the surface. Examples: If a body has been drowned depending on the temperature of the water may take several days. Of course in Aruba that could take place within a couple of days. The same holds true in the sand, in the ground and in a well or a cave. If cadaver dogs were used within the first 24 hours or even 48 hours the dogs unless cross-trained which very few are until recent times the dogs never had a chance to find anything.

David

E-mail No. 8

Greta,

Have the investigators checked to see if any new construction at the racquet club was due to have the foundation poured about the time Natalee disappeared or shortly after the disappearance? Natalee's body may have been buried in a foundation that was about to be poured and the three suspects may have been returning to the area to see if their secret burial spot was covered with cement. Is the construction in the area off grade or monolithic slabs? I doubt a cadaver dog would pick up a scent from a body buried in the middle of a foundation unless they walked on the foundation and can smell through the cement. However, cement has lime added to it and lime covers the cadaver scent.

Reward In Aruba Case Climbs To $1 Million

UPDATED: 9:34 am CDT July 26, 2005

ORANJESTAD, Aruba -- Aruban authorities have brought in experts from the Netherlands and sent a prosecutor to consult with the FBI as they seek to solve the disappearance of missing Mississippi native Natalee Holloway, officials said Monday.

The reward in the case rose to $1 million.

The four experts from the Netherlands traveled to the Dutch Caribbean island to assist with interrogations while two members of the team investigating the Holloway case traveled to the FBI crime lab in Quantico, Va., the public prosecutor's office of Aruba said.

Aruba has agreed to show transcripts of interrogations to the FBI, which is acting in an advisory role in the high-profile case, in a sign of increased cooperation that drew praise from the family of the Mountain Brook teen who vanished on the last night of a high school graduation trip.

"I'm really so grateful to the Aruban officials who have made it possible to release this information," said the teenager's mother, Beth Holloway Twitty (pictured here with her daughter)

after announcing that the reward for information leading to her safe return had been increased to $1 million.

A family spokeswoman in Birmingham said the reward was increased after Holloway's relatives received an offer from an anonymous benefactor.

No one has been charged in the case. Joran van der Sloot, the 17-year-old son of a judge in training on the island, has been detained as a suspect.

Aruban authorities agreed to provide the transcripts after the country's prime minister sent a letter to Attorney General Karin Janssen urging prosecutors to give the FBI "complete access" to materials from the investigation to the extent allowed under Dutch law, which governs the territory.

The FBI has also collected a sample of hair found on duct tape along the shore of the island for a DNA analysis. The agency has advised Aruban authorities in the six-week investigation into the disappearance of Holloway but previously had not had access to documents.

The public prosecutor's office said in a statement that Amalin Flanegin, a senior member of the prosecution team, and a police investigator would be at the FBI crime lab for a week with materials gathered during the investigation to discuss the case. They did not specify the materials.

Holloway, 18, disappeared May 30, hours before she was to catch a return flight to Alabama, at the end of a trip with 124 classmates. Extensive searches of the island have failed to find a trace of her, and Twitty said she hoped the increased reward -- plus a separate offer of $100,000 for information that solves the mystery -- will spur action in the case. Previously, the family offered $200,000 for her safe return.

In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled Natalee Holloway - Case Discussion Extended Thread 9, nuntukamen wrote:

can't get this pitcairn thing out of my mind since you brought it up, tho, since that involves a social acceptance within the island community of rape as an initiation into adult life, and apparently is a continuum for adult females on pitcairn, evolving from some strange twisted male view (and i'm a guy, but rape isn't a thought that ever comes to mind when seeing an alluring and attractive female or, like on pitcairn, a 10 year old virgin)...it was stated in an earlier thread, but our human civilization as a whole is no more sophisticated and kind than these boys are, or the folks on pitcairn, and what ever fate natalee experienced is a bell tolling for all of us.

-----
Pitcairn has a handful of inhabitants. Norfolk Island about 2000. Aruba about 90,000. As a sociological study, the dynamics at work appear to be the same no matter if the population is a handful or 90,000, or more. And the same for other islands as well. The parallel amazes me.

Your points are well spoken. We are dealing with "Crimes against women (and children)," everyday in the USA. I think that, too, may be better understood when looked at in the light of these basics.

Riehl World View - Natalee Holloway: Was She Raped And Murdered By Deepak Kalpoe?

As first mentioned in How Did Natalee Holloway Leave Carlos and Charlies, RWV has obtained exclusive, credible information as regards events surrounding the Mountain Brook Aruba trip in general, as well as specific events at Carlos and Charlies the night of Natalee Holloway's disappearance.

Diario Editor, Jossy Mansur, tonight on Fox News stated that in earlier testimony suspect Joran Van der Sloot claimed that Deepak Kalpoe raped and murdered Natalee Holloway and buried her body near a fisherman's hut on the beach. Van der Sloot is said to have claimed he had fallen asleep with Natalee on the beach, woke up and then left. He also is reported to have alleged that Deepak Kalpoe then went back, raped and murdered the young girl.

In a report from a student in attendance on the trip, this does match with certain information gathered during my reporting. It was stated to me that Joran, far from being an antagonist, was much more laid back in his interactions with the young Americans on the trip - and it was actually Deepak Kalpoe who was much more "in your face."

As already reported, at least one confrontation on the trip the night before the group's last evening in Aruba did not involve Joran Van der Sloot and a Mountain Brook student; instead, the confrontation was between Deepak Kalpoe and a student from the Alabama high school.

In addition to that, I have been told that, as reported elsewhere, the notion that Joran Van der Sloot "hit on" Natalee twice and was rebuffed was "ridiculous." Natalee, along with some other Mountain Brook girls was rather taken with the young Dutch boy and it should have come as no surprise to anyone that they might have wound up together in some fashion at the end of the evening.

The same cannot be said for Deepak Kalpoe - in fact, just the opposite. According to a student on the trip, Deepak Kalpoe appeared to be quite attracted to the young blond girl from Alabama, who did not return the attraction and was far more interested in Joran.

Also as previously reported in story above, I've been informed that Natalee Holloway did not leave the front of Carlos and Charlies with Joran Van der Sloot, she was seen leaving with Deepak Kalpoe by, perhaps, the last known Mountain Brook student to see her alive. The report comes from one of the students inside of one of the now infamous taxi cabs into which other friends of Natalee thought she would enter to return to her hotel and safety.

While this last piece is speculative at best, based upon what I have learned, it is entirely possible that Deepak Kalpoe used Joran Van der Sloot as bait to get Natalee away from her friends. If Van der Sloot, the Kalpoes and Natalee all met up either around the corner, or on the beach, it would jibe with the information I have obtained.

Based upon gathered information speaking directly to the then existing dynamics between the young men and Natalee Holloway, I found the version of events attributed to Joran Van der Sloot and related by Jossy Mansur on Fox News tonight to be possibly the most credible version of events that night I've heard to date.

Update: Another point, as I reported here weeks ago, additional information from Aruba pointed to an eyewitness who saw both Kalpoe brothers thoroughly washing out their vehicle at a location beside their home which was termed "unusual." It was suggested the location was not the normal one they used and would help to obscure any view of their efforts from the street. This took place after their initial release from questioning and prior to their arrest.

When, based upon discussions I had with individuals close to the search party, EquuSearch sought to check the area with dogs, they were turned away by the Mother of Deepak Kalpoe.

Lawsuit against transferring files to the FBI

ARUBA – District Attorney Amelin Flanegin left for Virginia (USA) last Sunday afternoon to bring the videotapes and other information in the Holloway-case to the FBI. The defense of the suspects does not agree with this and instituted a lawsuit against it.

Also a member of the RTS and a member of the OM went to the US. The FBI will pore over the material in the presence of the Aruban delegation. The FBI hopes that their experts can shed a different light on the case. Flanegin will return to Aruba this coming Sunday. Last Friday, Prime Minister Nelson Oduber and Justice-minister Rudy Croes had ordered the attorney general to open all the files to the FBI. The order was done in writing to the head of the Aruban Public Prosecution (OM). According to spokesperson of the OM, Mariaine Croes, this visit to the FBI was already primed, before the OM received the letter. The OM wants to use al available expertise, from the Netherlands as well as from the FBI.

The defense was not informed about the fact that the FBI would get access to all the information. It will be very careless if this is the case. Pursuant to the Code of Criminal Procedure, only the persons mentioned in the law have power of criminal investigation. When, according to the law, unauthorized people start doing investigations in this case, the guarantee that the suspect derives from the Aruban law, lapses. Neither the judge nor the defense can check whether everything goes according to the rules or not. The defense does not know what part the FBI is now going to have in this case. The defense has turned in an appeal to the examining-magistrate Rick Smid in Curacao for a criminal procedure. No date has been set yet for the lawsuit.

It is a sad issue in the judicial world that the highest local authorities take actions without legal basis, just because they are under pressure of the American media. The defense expects that the OM would wait for a judicial decision, before complying with the instructions of the Aruban government. If the OM doesn’t, their client would reserve the right to request persecution of the not-susceptibility of the OM.

According to Spokesperson Croes, it is up to the examining-magistrate to decide on this and the OM will have to go along with his decision.

I am only going to reply this one time you. The conversation about bimbos revolved around the perceptions of the babe magnet boys/guys.

I will say it loudly in case you are deaf. I DID NOT SAY THAT NATALEE WAS A BIMBO. She seems to be a nice young lady that went to the wrong palce at the wrong time. I do question some of the reports we are getting pertaining to her being afraid to go to the restroom alone, yet she leaves the group to try and catch up with another group further ahead.

I am entitled to my opinion, just as you are and I sincerely wish that you would stop trying to bait me into a flame war.

My comment about bimbos and the babe magnets (guys) is that in the previous conversation on this topic it seemed that people expected the boys the behave better than the girls. I even freepmailed gingersnaps about this aspect when the last conversation on this topic took place, mentioning that I noticed girls were somehow exempt from having someone question their behavior or attire. That it seems to be ok for young gals to walk around in public with 3 inches of cleavage exposed.

You can go right ahead and perform verbal acrobatics to twist my words all you want. Based upon previous freepmail that I have received, it seems that many have already figured you out. Bless your heart.

In Other News:

Suspects of double homicide arrested

BONAIRE – Two suspects in last week’s double homicide on the brothers Martis were arrested this morning. The first suspect, the 20-year old E.W. was taken by surprise out of his bed this morning. The second one, the 22-year old L.C. was caught in the course of the morning, when he was out at sea on a fishing boat near Klein Bonaire.

The murder of Lisandro (23) and Wendell (18) has shocked Bonaire. Already in an early stage of the investigation, the police knew the identity of the two persons, but needed to collect enough evidence, before they could arrest them. The police are still investigating the motive of the homicide. The initial plan was to arrest them in the night of Saturday to Sunday, but it had to be postponed in order to verify the latest details. This morning around 04:30, the police and the VKB, both well equipped with bullet proof vests and heavy armory, including machine guns, turned out to arrest the suspects.

E.W. was dragged out of his bed in Den Tera. The other one, L.C., fled on board of a fishing boat, but the police arrested him near Klein Curacao. The owner of the boat was also arrested. The police will investigate to what extend his involvement is in this case. Assisting a suspect in getting away is against the law and punishable. Both suspects are from Bonaire. They will undergo intensive interrogations in order to discover the facts of the murder.

Very, very interseting. I wonder who this student is.

As already reported, at least one confrontation on the trip the night before the group's last evening in Aruba did not involve Joran Van der Sloot and a Mountain Brook student; instead, the confrontation was between Deepak Kalpoe and a student from the Alabama high school.

I must have missed this in the very long timeline that was posted recently. I will have to go back and re-read the timeline to see what day. The only scuffles I recall reading about were supposed to have been between Joran and a Holloway and between Joran and a Twitty.

Again, the timeline I read seems to be full of errors, as it mentioned him being rebuffed not just once but twice. I even commented how I found it odd that Natalee would not speak to someone that she herself had previously introduced herself to just a few hours earlier. hmmmmmmmmmmmm

The same cannot be said for Deepak Kalpoe - in fact, just the opposite. According to a student on the trip, Deepak Kalpoe appeared to be quite attracted to the young blond girl from Alabama, who did not return the attraction and was far more interested in Joran.

Hmmmmm a student that was actually there seems to think that Natalee was interested in Joran.

Please, why do a few people spend so much time explaining/defending/ranting. I just wonder if the same people argue verbally with others or are they just argumentative because they are incognito. I guess here I am ranting but I would like to stick to information about Natalie, not all these posts about familial relations, defensiveness about opinions, etc. It is getting very tiresome and makes these threads longer than necessary. Why not just start a thread to fight in and leave it all there.
