The DNA could just be a buccal sample, from the inside of the mouth, which is where it's taken from, the inside of the cheeks.
So if some guy used her toothbrush, it would get on there from the inside of the mouth (still ewww, if someone did that).

IIRC some of Natalee's belongings were turned in for DNA testing. Remember her hairbrush!
