It's time for WalMart to destroy China's little man markets. Boy I just love those words in Alan Jacksons song.

For those who hate globalization because it's destroying American jobs, Walmart's profits in China don't hurt any American, and will eventually help our deficit.

"Cowboy hats and shotguns."

Hmmm...I wonder what the gun department in a Chinese Walmart looks like?

Racks with super soaker water pistols?

You're about right. Cops are on every corner, but none have a gun. Only the military and homicide detectives are able to carry.

How, when much of the the trade deficit with China, either directly or indirectly can be traced to Wal-Mart.

According to Wal-Mart itself, the corporation accounts for 10 to 15% of all Chinese exports. Many other companies import for Wal-Mart directly into the Wal-mart distribution system. This is harder to trace, although my brother did import/exports for several years for Gillette, and he performed some transactions for Wal-mart. Gillette is the importer of record for all such transactions.

You're discussing the current situation. The more WalMarts open in China, I couldn't think that they will sell only Chinese goods (especially as the Chinese standard of living increases). Also, at least some of the profits will be paid as dividends to WalMart investors, some of whom are actually US citizens! This will balance some of the deficits caused by the imports.

In a free market economy you cannot stop the imports. If we have a problem with them, we as a people need to stop buying them. Only when "made in china" becomes a lethal brand would people stop importing. Until then going after WalMart simply plays in the hands of WalMart's competition who also import from China (but may be able to operate under the radar as they have a lower profile compared to WalMart).

The current situation means that Wal-Mart and China can effectively control the US economy to a significant extent. I would like to see Wal-Mart adopt a policy of equalizing that trade--a Dollar for Dollar match.

Whatever are you talking about? The US economy is $12 trillion. Imports from China in 2004 were $196 billion (about 1.6%). Wal-Marts sales in the US for 2004 were about $220 billion (1.8%). If we were to stop buying from China their economy would collapse. They have no control over our economy. It is quite the opposite.

I would like to see Wal-Mart adopt a policy of equalizing that trade--a Dollar for Dollar match.

Wal-Mart will act in the best interest of their customers and stockholders which is exactly how they should operate. Would you also like to see our government adopt a five-year plan?
