WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans are far more likely than the Japanese to expect another world war in their lifetime, according to AP-Kyodo polling 60 years after World War II ended. Most people in both countries believe the first use of a nuclear weapon is never justified.

Was WWIII won by President Reagan when the Berlin Wall came down? That would make the current battle with these terroristic Islamists WWIV.

Was WWIII won by President Reagan when the Berlin Wall came down? That would make the current battle with these terroristic Islamists WWIV. I believe the confusion stems from the Cold War (WWIII) being limited to local proxies such as Korea, Viet Nam, Afganistan, etc.
People around the world know in their guts that this time around will be similar to WWII: global in scale, destructive in nature and fought with unconditional surrender as the goal.
The current warm-up act in Iraq is just a prelude to filter out and help ID our internal/external enemies.

Kinda like the Spanish Civil War was the prelude and testing-ground for the main act, World War II.

Same old same old but a little different.....the U.N. does NOT have 'Plowshears' but,......uses ADVANCED MURDEROUS WEAPONS OF NON-BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!

If you want to get technical about it, the War on Terror is actually World War Six. Back in the 1700's you had the Seven Years War (what we Americans call the French and Indian War) that was fought in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Next you had the Napoleonic Wars, which were fought in the same regions. Then you have the traditional World Wars One and Two actually being Three and Four. The Cold War was WW5 and the War on Terror is WW6.

Americans are far more likely than the Japanese to expect another world war in their lifetimeIt'll be caused by left wing anti-American propaganda in the press and media. They gave the Communist Vietnamese hope and the will to keep fighting to defeat America, and many good men died because of it.
If they were to support this country, things would a lot different today. The war on terror would be just about over.

In reading the responses herein, it seems to me that we are essentially in agreement on the fact that this developing
Civilizational Clash is in fact fast unfolding as the initial stage of a protracted "World War" in the context of Islam vs Western Democracy.
In close reading of Huntington, Lewis, Gaddis, Johnson, etc...one thread is abundantly clear:
This will be an extremely PROTRACTED conflict. By all measure, Europe is lost. Basic demographics validate that point. When we bang indigenous Birthrates of 0.9-1.0 against the immigrant Muslim 2.4 -- and run it through two generations, figure out the result for yourselves. LOST! As an example, Leicester is majority Muslim already -- and the voting bloc(s) essentially determine policy in the Western Democracies.
The United States is in the initial throes of a mortal conflict for its very survival. To me, that is the reality of the day.
Dancing semantics on the head of a pin doesn't do it for me at this juncture.
Fellow Freepers, please have a delightful summer weekend.

Almost. 9/11 was the assasination of the Arch-Duke Ferdinand.
The rest is the pressure building while China and Russia try and get Kim & the Arabs to stir things up.
The first two nukes were justified and the next ones we launch will be justfified as well.
The liberals can go to he$$.

This may occur in our local neighborhoods. I'm stocked up on guns & ammo.
It's like that old joke about there not being any Muslims on Star Trek. Sheik asked why there were no Muslims on the show. The answer was that it takes place in the future and there ain't no Muslims............
