Obama a Celebrity Despite Low-Key Approach
AP ^ | 7/25/05 | SHARON COHEN, AP National Writer

Posted on 07/23/2005 11:30:56 AM PDT by mathprof

The line forms the moment Sen. Barack Obama is done speaking, a procession of admirers clutching copies of his book, magazines, scraps of paper, disposable cameras and one homemade American flag. It doesn't take long before someone pops the question.

An elderly woman, dressed in bubble-gum pink, looks up with wide eyes. The lanky senator leans in to hear her amid the din in the stuffy library meeting room.

"In 2008 or some other time," she says, "will we get a chance to work for you for president?"

Obama grins, but demurs. He is not running for president. Not in 2008, at least.

[snip]

He's a deliberately low-key newcomer to Capitol Hill, careful to avoid upstaging the powerful old bulls on their home turf. But he's also an A-list celebrity, courted by everyone from Oprah to Gorbachev.

[snip]

Obama — the only black member of the U.S. Senate — knows no matter what he does, the expectations in some circles are in the stratosphere.

"In some circumstances, there probably are people who expect me to have solved the world's problems already ... ," he says

[snip]

Not everyone has been enamored. Peggy Noonan replied caustically to an essay Obama wrote for Time about Abraham Lincoln.

Obama compared his humble roots to those of 16th president: His father was a Kenyan he barely knew, his mother was from Kansas. Their son, raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, would become the first black president of the Harvard Law Review.

"There is nothing wrong with Barack Obama's resume, but it is a log-cabin-free-zone," Noonan recently wrote in an online column for The Wall Street Journal. "So far it is also a greatness-free zone. If he keeps talking about himself like this, it will always be."

Obama a Celebrity Due to Media Obsequiousness

Other than being somewhat charismatic, and a good speaker, what has this guy ever really done?

Dumped his white mother and maternal grandparents in favor of embracing the skin pigmentation of the father who abandoned him so that he can play the race card in furthering his career. This is known as Halle Berry Syndrome.

He gives liberal newspaper reporters someone to write about so they can say "Look how liberal I am, I wrote an article about a BLACK person!" It's about the reporter's secret bias being covered and not about the subject. IMHO

Considering that Senator Obama (I always have to do a double-take on that name), is matched with Illinois' utterly imbecilic and totally obnoxious Senator Dick "the Flop" Durbin, I am not surprised that he is well received. Now if he was fat, white, had bad skin, and spoke with a stutter, but was equally intelligent and charming, would he be the poster boy for the "moderate" left? This is an age of images not substance as the late Neil Postman pointed out. When William Howard Taft could not be elected because of his portly demeanor.

It's an age where television news anchors are cloned in the labs of some secret New York genetic firm so that they all come out looking and speaking like Barbie/Ken variations. Where our actors and actresses have the faces and characters worthy of toothpaste commercials. In other words, an age of utter mediocrity--and Senator Obama rises to the top of the mediocre milk shake.

If the man had a average name like Michael Brown and was white, he wouldn't get the time of day from any of the press.

Well if he's got a thumbs-up from Gorbachev, it's all over...might as well just start calling him "Mr. Vice-President"! /sarcasm off

What is the AP grooming him for?

The new age Jesse(I liked to spit in white folks soup) Jackson. Obama has the slick approach that Jesse used to have. All he lacks is an illegal money well and a young girl friend to entertain him when away from home.

This guy gives me the creeps. I think he's a total phony and a stealth commie socialist and the usual anti-American in sheep's clothing. Total facade.

They are drumming up a "black American" as the new paradigm for all Americans of African descent. With no "slave" blood in his family history, and at least 50% Northern European Caucasian descent, Barack is probably more Muslim Arabic than indigenous black African in his paternal line of descent.

Of course, the old rule to be declared an "Indian" applies - if you say you are an Indian, you are an Indian. But then, the problem is to find a tribe that will accept you.

What "tribe" is Barack supposed to belong to?

Be honest, if you were walking down the street and saw him and did not who he was, and you later asked to describe him, would you say he was a white guy or a black guy? Many white couples today have adopted children from China, those children don't become white racially, but they of course love and respect their parents.

Maybe they would be a good un-electable pair. 2 screaming, teasonous and anti-American, smug, condescending, self-righteous closet fascists. '

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

He is a charasmatic lightweight. When he gets done talking, I think, 'gee that's great, but what the hell did he say?'. He is in office because of failed - or absent - leadership from the Illinois GOP. There was a whisper campaign in 04 that the GOP cut a deal with him, knowing that Keyes had no chance. If/when Durbin is indicted on national security charges, Obama will rise to become the senior senator. It has been a cakewalk and a fluke, enabled by IL-GOP ineptness.

The press and the media can groom him all they want but barack obama brings nothign to the national table. Blacks already vote democrat 90% to republicans 10% so its not like he can pull anymore of the black vote becuase that 10% tend to be very conservative and will easily see through Obama Osama's fakeness. All obama does is spew leftist ideals with a smile and a mention of god and say that the bible says we must do x y and z in hopes of pulling other voters. Obama is from illinois, a solid blue state so it hardly pulls that and he has no regional pull.

If democrats were to put a hispanic on the ticket, say a bill ricahrdson that could help them more than an obama because richardson could potentially pull a few more hispancs from the GOP which would hurt them plus Richardson has regional pull being from new mexico he carries that state and can help flip colorado and nevada which would = a victory for democrats.

I agree. He comes off as a nice guy, a good speaker and very smooth on the surface. But when I take a closer look at what he is actually saying, I am really turned off.

It isn't an issue about skin pigmentation. It is an issue of Obama being a big phony...just like Halle Berry. Both of them had black fathers who abandoned them. Both were raised by the caucasian sides of their families. However, when the opportunity to advance based on skin color arose, they ignored those who had done so much for them and embraced those who did nothing except donate sperm. It is a horrible example of duplicity that no child of any color should emulate. They are not role models. They are prostitutes.
