Anti-immigration Rep. Tom Tancredo hints at presedential run

DENVER - Tom Tancredo has been called a one-trick pony of a politician, a man out of step with his party, a bigot.

The Republican congressman vehemently opposes illegal immigration, and he created an uproar last week when he talked about nuking Muslim holy sites.

No matter, Tancredo is pressing on and even hinting at a long-shot presidential bid in 2008.

Tancredo has already visited New Hampshire and Iowa this year, and says he found a welcome audience among voters who are fed up with the nation's immigration policies, including proposals by President Bush.

"Unless I misread the political tea leaves, there is a great deal of support for what I say," Tancredo said.

Tancredo raised eyebrows last week by telling a radio talk show host that "you could take out" Islamic holy sites should terrorists ever launch a nuclear attack against the United States.

"You're talking about bombing Mecca," asked the host.

"Yeah," Tancredo responded, saying he was "just throwing out some ideas." He later said his comments were taken out of context and refused to apologize.

Few consider Tancredo a serious challenger for the GOP presidential nomination, but his stance resonates with some in a post-September 11 era when volunteer groups like the Minutemen have been patrolling the border for illegal immigrants.

Tancredo would like the United States to patrol its borders with the military. He said the U.S. also needs a guest worker program that requires employers to prove a need for short-term labor, without amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Esteban Flores, executive director of the Latino Research and Policy Center in Denver, calls Tancredo a bigot who is trying to use racial division to further his career. He compared Tancredo to George Wallace, the outspoken opponent of desegregation.

I know exactly how you feel. I ate an an all-you-can-eat restaurant, and Buchanan-Tancredo-Duke inspired me to realize how much more I was paying for and subsidizing all the obese and gluttonous customers! We need to deport the fatties!

So, lets set up a hypothetical situation. Let's say that in the 2008 election cycle the following GOP candidates are vying for the GOP nomination.

Who would you be more opt to vote for? This is really for my own edification. And as an FYI, if Allen is really what he seems to be, he would get my vote.

George Allen.

Jeb isn't running, Condi doesn't want to run, and Tom is a joke.

Tancredo is a good man and has a realistic understanding of the dangers of illegal immigrants and open borders. Any politician can be trashed by taking statements out of context.

BTW, even liberal Alan Colmes today mentioned that our borders need to be protected.

I like Koolaid. I also like the GOP. If the GOP did not but stop the rats it would still make them a billion times better than flushing my vote away with a 3rd party failure. Republicans are in the driver seat, not conservatives.

I happen to think that Tancredo, if nothing else got the ball rolling on illegal immigration as far as bringing it to the forefront, so we will have to disagree on your thoughts about him. However at least we agree on Allen.

... but it sure helps get the Dem candidate.

I don't understand how anyone can say this. What about Nader - I don't think the people who voted for him would have voted for Bush instead, meaning they actually helped Bush win by the logic on the thread. I personally NEVER would have voted for a Repub OR Dem the years I voted 3rd party - every year the two mainstreamers merge closer and closer together. How normally intelligent people on this forum can think this way, and try to strong-arm and harass 3rd party/candidate voters, is beyond me. It sounds like a bunch of liberals calling conservs names. Instead of helping to make our country stronger, all I see is a bunch of sniping because Tancredo might be a threat to the Bush-Clinton Dynasty.

Actually, the more i read about Tancredo, after getting past the ranting screaming and smearing of the leftist traitor cowardly perverts.....the more i like him. And the more it appears that his positions are well reasoned and not knee
jerk crapola that the appeasing degenerates of the Left come up with.

You're absolutely correct...Bush is not a "clown". Clowns are entertaining. Bush is simply a disgrace to this Republic. I can only assume that you're all in favor of the things that have happened under his (non)leadership. So you favor CAFTA, CFR, NCLB and a war against Iraq that will never produce a democracy (How many troops have been killed now?) as well as increased entitlements. Perhaps you can't see reality because your eyes are blinded by George's butt cheeks.

If you look closely it's GWB that's dropping the bombs in the fashion of Dr. Strangelove.
