SAN FRANCISCO: Newsom staffer touts his boss for 'World Mayor 2005'

The title carries punch: "World Mayor 2005.'' And for the second year in a row, San Francisco's own Gavin Newsom has made the list of finalists in the Web-based, international competition in which constituents nominate their favorite mayor.

Although Newsom hasn't been campaigning for the title, his administration's liaison to the gay community who works in the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services used his city e-mail Tuesday to drum up support for his boss.

James "Jimmer'' Cassiol wrote to people on the e-mail list "gays4gavin" that now that Newsom has made the finals, "we need folks to take a minute and vote for Newsom as the choice for World Mayor 2005.''

Neither Cassiol nor the director of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services responded to requests for comment.

Peter Ragone, Newsom's spokesman, said he saw nothing inappropriate about the pitch going out on city e-mail. "In fact, I'm happy Jimmer has so much pride in our office that he would share it with others," Ragone said.

Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said he didn't think the e- mail was a misuse of government resources, nor in any way illegal. But, he added, "I don't see how it furthers any neighborhood or constituent services.''

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, shown being greeted at this year's gay pride parade, is a finalist in the international contest.

I guess that explains the divorce from the lingerie model.

I think the "Miss World" title is the more appropriate pursuit.

They've actually never divorced, they filed but I just read something the other day in some rag that said the date to make it final came and went without any action so it looks like they've reconciled

I agree with you. I live in San Francisco and think the reason Mayor Newsom sponsored gay marriage as his first action as mayor was...well, I'm sure you understand what I mean....
