A great man died on July 5th. None of the obituaries noted that his greatest gift to America was the one we have, so far, refused. A missed diagnosis of classic proportions!
Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale was arguably the most decorated officer in Navy history: 26 personal citations, including the Congressional Medal of Honor for nearly eight years of heroism as a Vietnam POW. But he was famous mostly for his decision to become Ross Perot's 1992 vice presidential running mate, and for that disastrous debate when he came across as, at best, a kindly old buffoon who should have brought a back-up hearing aid with him to the studio. A few pundits sneered. Most were embarrassed for him and happy to let the whole thing drop.

We noticed
Ditto.
He was also the pilot of a jet fighter over the gulf of tunken in Vietnam when Pres Johnson (Dem) said we were attacked and plunged America into the Vietnam was as Kennedy put troops there.
Stockdale always maintained it never happened and 30 years later we now know, he was right.

I think it's a great article and I would like to know from all the military people in FR and the world beyond-how come more wasn't said?
Lord, that we all had such character!
I noticed and so did Rep. Duncan Hunter and Duke Cunningham..I have seen them get up twice since he died to give eulogys on the House floor.
May you rest in peace and honor as a great American patriot.
FReepers noticed. If the author expected the MSM to honor Admiral Stockdale as a hero, then the author's on Planet Zongo.
Another HERO gone..........Sad..........
While I liked and voted for Perot, many people here on FR believe that Stockdale's running mate caused Bush1's defeat in 1992. Stockdale was a stud and that is how he should be remembered.
I became a Dennis Miller fan when he openly berated those who laughed at and made fun of Adm. Stockdale and his debate performance. He shut them up as he told them of the Admirals heroism. He did that on stage, in front of an audience, not hiding behind a column or reporter. Another reason to detest Perot for.
He was featured on an History Channel show about Viet Nam this last week in Chicago. He was really something to see interviewed. Godspeed.
Great man and great american.
Admiral Stockdale didn't do himself any favors running as Perot's VP and participating in that debate, but as a MAN, who do you respect more, the good Admiral or the two pretty boys that shared the debate with him?
Perot personally flew his own 727 into Hanoi with Red Cross supplies for the POWs. Stockdale knew that and he did not forget a man who help save him.
I'd read some of his writings years before the '92 campaign & knew of his background/interest in philosophy.
So when in that debate he started off with the "Who am I" thing...(a paraphrase), it made perfect sense to me & I explained it to my puzzled husband.
It was mortifying to read the guffaws & derision directed his way! IMO, only Perot deserved that!
I became a Dennis Miller fan after seeing that. I would have voted for Admiral Stockdale myself if he ran for POTUS. A brilliant man. People who made fun of him were not worthy to shine his shoes.
