Rumor has it that Microsoft plans to use Vista as the official name for the next version of Windows, which has been known by its codename, Longhorn. In addition to the rumors on various Microsoft enthusiast sites, the company has also registered the domain name windowsvista.us, as noted by Windows watcher bink.nu.
The company won't comment, but it is expected to make some sort of Longhorn-related announcement Friday morning.
I say, I say what's the deal, boy? That's a slap in the face, insulting that is.
I read about this earlier on anandtech, I don't like it. Sounds cheesy. Longhorn sounds better.
You heard it first here! The official new name for the Longhorn operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista, according to our insider sources. The name was mentioned today at the Microsoft sales conference in Atlanta. The official announcement will go live at 6 AM PST. The press release will be live here at this time. Bink has followed up our lead by posting the Microsoft domain registration. Microsoft Watch has done a nice follow up to our story.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Microsoft: "Vista as in a long, beautiful view."
Customers: "Vista as in 'hasta la.'"
So, when our governor turns on his Mac, he says, Hasta la Vista, Baby....
XP
being smiley code for "dead and gone," I could scarcely give a good rip about the name they give to their next abomination. It's like Red Hat Linux naming their OS versions cute names. Who, besides the shills and whores for the company, gives a bloody rip?
Does this mean that Microsoft has gone Disney on us?
A "Vista" is something one sees on the horizon...
Who cares what it's called...if it allows me to pick the very best hardware to build a computer that runs circles around whatever cookie cutter stamped box that Jobs bundles with his software, I'll buy it.
Microsoft has been using "Longhorn" as a working title since 2002. It's good to see that they are finally working on an official product name. Perhaps the product itself is nearing completion.
I'm more concerned with what *I* decide to call it after it ships.
They never seem to use the names I pick.
Understandable, I guess. SHI*T is in the public domain and therefore not trademark friendly. They had no choice but to stick with XP. :)
I doubt the Patent and Trademark Office wants to touch that one.
I wonder if there's an exotic sounding Greek or Latin word that means "Maintaining The Upgrade Treadmill"?
So Shorthorn becomes Hasta La Vista. Software without a purpose that 99% of users will receive only marginal utility from. But will Word or Excel run faster??
Longhorn has always been a codename. This is SOP for Microsoft (and many others). All the earlier Windows versions had codenames.
hasta la vista, baby bill. go DRM you wife instead of us...
